RUBY, Bernard E. - age 87, formerly of Otter Lake, MI, passed away peacefully on May 02, 2016. Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, May 8 at Sharp Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 6063 Fenton Road. Visitation will be held 2-8 PM Saturday and 12-2 PM Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will take place at 9:30 AM Monday, May 9 at Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly. Those desiring may make contributions to the Heminger Jones American Legion Post #504 in Otter Lake.

Bernard was born in Otter Lake, to Allen E. Ruby and Mary Irene (White) Ruby on April 23, 1929. He graduated from Otter Lake High School in 1947 and attended Eastern Michigan University. During his enterprising life, he wore many hats. He played baseball for many years, including blooper ball at Northwoods. He worked at the American Legion Children’s home in Otter Lake, where he met and cared for his “son”, Kenneth Kelly. He was a school bus driver; a Justice of the Peace and served as an ordained Minister, during which time he joined many couples in matrimony. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He also worked for Chevrolet and eventually retired from Fisher Body Shipping and Receiving Department in 1986. He proudly served his community in the American Legion, Post 504 as past Commander, Adjutant and Chaplain for over 55 years. He made many special friends doing the activities he loved: bowling, baseball, singing, attending church, and his special hobby; winning at casinos.

He is survived by his sons, Ronald Ruby and Ken Kelly; Brother, Elvin Ruby; Granddaughters, Cheyenne Ruby (Christian Boisclair) and Jhenna Stebbins (Nick Strong); beloved great granddaughters, Aria, Harper, and Dahlia; many nieces and nephews as well as several other special family members.

Bernard was preceded in death by his parents, Allen E. and Mary Irene Ruby; brother and sister in law, Allen “Hank” and Patricia Ruby; brother and sister in law, Lloyd and Donna Ruby; sister, Mary “Sandy” Ratza; Sister in law, Margie Ruby, and many of his friends.

The family would like to extend a grateful thank you to Peggy Allinger and Jessica Stone for the unconditional love and care they provided for Bernard.
