Robert McLaren, age 85, passed away on Sunday, December 20, 2015. Robert was born on June 13, 1930 in Flint to parents Robert Primrose McLaren and Jane (Crawford) McLaren. He was the Marble Champion at Civic Park School, the YMCA City Champ in basketball in 1948, and he was named to all-star basketball team which was selected after completion of the state inter-church intermediate boys’ tourney in Detroit. He also loved participating in the golden gloves boxing, in baseball as a pitcher, and in basketball. Robert graduated from Northern High School in 1948, and attended Flint Jr. College for 1 ½ years before getting drafted into the Army and serving in Korea for two years. He was a Corporal and earned three bronze service stars as a heavy equipment operator. Robert then graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in Journalism and then graduated from the General Motors Institute. He worked at AC Spark Plug and General Motors for many years, and retired from AC-Delco in 1986 as the Product Communications Manager. From 1979-1981 Robert served as the President of the National Catalog Managers Association. He was also a life member of Flint Elks Lodge 222. Robert loved to watch any kind of sports, but was especially excited to cheer on his Spartans! He also loved golfing, woodworking, and taking care of his wild birds. Robert married the love of his life, Jeanne Tremblay, in 1955, who survives him. He is also survived by his two lovely children: Bill (LouAnn) McLaren, and Cheryl (Rob) McGrail; six grandchildren: Niki, Jim, Danielle, David, Tom, and Dan; nieces: Kathy, Janice, Lisa, and Roni Jane; nephew, Tom. He was preceded in death by both parents; twin brother Ronald, and sister Irene. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial contribution to Reverence Home Health and Hospice in Grand Blanc or Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. A memorial service will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday, December 23, 2015 at Hill Funeral Home, 11723 S. Saginaw St. The family will receive visitors on Wednesday from 9-11am. Inurnment at Great Lakes National Cemetery. |
