Sonia Daisy Zaroo - Age 74, died Wednesday, March 27, 2019, at her home in Flint, Mich. She passed peacefully, of natural causes, while surrounded by family and loved ones.
Sonia was a first-generation born Assyrian to Paul and Louise Joseph (Moses), both of whom emigrated from Persia. On April 22, 1944, Louise gave birth to Sonia, the youngest of her six children. A Flint girl through and through, Sonia lived her entire life in her hometown.
She attended Doyle-Ryder Elementary School, Whittier Junior High School and graduated from Flint Central High Class of 1962. She worked as a secretary for St. Paul Insurance Company for 18 years before working as a court recorder for the 68th District Court between 1994-2014.
Sonia met Zia Philip Zaroo I in 1970, and they were married a year later, on July 24, 1971. She gave birth to the first of her two children -- Rebecca -- in January, 1973. Two years later, in May of 1975, Sonia gave birth to Philip.
An incredibly loyal woman, Sonia was by Zia’s side for nearly four decades as he served as Shamasha (Deacon) at the Holy Assyrian Apostolic Church of the East. She was also cherished as loving Auntie Sonia by her nieces and nephews, many of whom she warmly referred to as her “first kids.”
From her taste in music -- Elvis Presley and Jackie Wilson were two of her favorites -- to her taste in cars -- a ‘57 Chevy would make her heart skip a beat -- Sonia was a true child of the 50s and 60s. More than anything, though, she loved her family, who will miss her smile, laughter and a kind, gentle exterior that belied her understated strength.
Sonia is survived by her children Rebecca Lynn (Brian) Johns of Flint, and Philip Simon (Emily) Zaroo; grandchildren Stephen, Noah and Adin Johns, and Zoe Sonia, Adia and Zia Zaroo II; sibling: David Joseph of Swartz Creek, Mich. She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, 2 sisters and three brothers.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday April 2 at Mar Shimun Bar Sabbai Parish, 3112 Lewis St., in Flint. Visitation will be held Monday from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., with a 7 p.m. service, at Sharp Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 6063 Fenton Rd., in Flint. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Holy Apostolic Catholic Assyrian Church of the East or Assyrian Cemetery of Flint. Tributes may be shared at www.sharpfuneralhomes.com |
