Walter H. Deming, age 91, of Lapeer, formerly of Lum, died Saturday, March 12, 2016. Mr. Deming was born October 9, 1924 in Lum, to Harold and Joy (Hunter) Deming. He graduated in 1943 from Imlay City High School. Walt was an excellent baseball and softball player, he even had an opportunity to tryout as catcher for the Detroit Tigers. When he received his call back for a second tryout with the Tigers, he had already been drafted into the Army. Mr. Deming proudly served his country in the Tank Division of the U.S. Army during WWII, receiving 2 purple hearts. He was injured in battle on February 25, 1945 in Germany, he spent weeks in recovery. After returning home Walter married his true love, Dorothy Addison, on June 29, 1946 in Birmingham, Michigan. Walt attended Barber College in Detroit and returned to Lum to open a Barbershop and Pool Hall. He also served as a volunteer firefighter. In 1957 Walter and Dorothy moved to Lapeer, where he worked for Star Barbershop, eventually buying it and working there until his retirement in 1986. Mr. Deming enjoyed golfing, fishing, playing cards, going to the casino, Tiger baseball, coaching Little League, motor home trips and especially bowling. He was active with the Lapeer Bowling Association, where with Dorothy's help, he served as Secretary for many many years. Mr. Deming was also a member of the Lapeer American Legion Post #16 and the Disabled American Veterans. Above all else Walt loved people, especially his wife, son, daughter and grandchildren.
Walter is survived by his children: Ted (Barb) Deming of North Branch and Connie Deming of Lapeer; grandchildren: Kim (Jim) Klutts of North Branch, Jodi (Dennis) Alcock of Grand Blanc, Theo Deming of Flushing, Lee (Nikki) Bishop of Royal Oak, and Ashlee Wallace of Lapeer; and great-grandchildren: Tharon, Julie Emerson, Easton and Henry. He was preceded in death by his wife: Dorothy (in January of this year); parents: Harold and Joy Deming; and an infant brother.
Visitation will be 4-8PM Monday, March 14, 2016 at Muir Brothers Funeral Home in Lapeer. Walter's funeral service will be 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, March 15, 2016 at the funeral home, followed immediately by military honors under the auspices of American Legion Post #16 Honor Guard. Pastor Drew Jolly will officiate the service and burial will be in Great Lakes National Cemetery - Holly, Michigan. Memorial contributions may be made to Wounded Warrior Project, P.O.
