ESFAHANI, Dr. Ali A. – Was born in Tabriz, Iran in 1932. He graduated from Tehran University Medical School with an MD in 1955.

He immigrated to the United States in 1956 for his post graduate training in Nashville, Tennessee. Dr. Esfahani performed his residency in general surgery in Jacksonville, Florida, general and vascular surgery in Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit, Michigan, thoracic and cardiovascular surgery in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He gained his fellowship in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery in Houston, Texas.

He and his partner established the first open heart surgery practice in Genesee County. He published research on cardiothoracic surgery, helping to expand the field.

He moved to the United States during a period of great social and racial change. He was proud to be a citizen of a country that offered expansive opportunities to immigrants.

Dr. Esfahani was a Diplomat of the American Board of General Surgery, the Board of Thoracic Surgery, and the American Thoracic Society. He was also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Angiology, and the American College of Chest Physicians.

He was an active member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, The Flint Academy of Surgery, the Detroit Surgical Association, the Michigan Thoracic Society, the Michigan Heart Association, the Pan American Medical Association, and the McClure Surgical Society He was a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, and the International College of Surgeons.

He was an active member of the American Medical Association, The Michigan State Medical Society, and the Genesee County Medical Society.

While President of the Genesee County Medical Society, he spearheaded a statewide program to honor patients with Patient Appreciation Day, celebrated the 3rd Tuesday of each October.

He was also a member of many social organizations, including the Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club.

Dr. Ali Esfahani died peacefully on Sunday, August 9th.

He loved helping people and his community, loved learning, loved painting and golf, even if golf didn’t love him. He loved his family and was proud of their accomplishments.

He is survived by his wife, Lila;

His two sons, Cameron and wife Jane, Shahram and wife Kim; his grandchildren, Margaret, Lila and Logan.

Memorial visitation will be held at a later date.
