Emmett T. Armstrong, age 91 of Durand, passed away on Saturday, October 20, 2012 at the Durand Senior Care and Rehab Center. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel. Pastor John Miller will be officiating with burial to follow in Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. with Mrs. Armstrong present from 2-4 p.m.
Emmett was born on September 26, 1921 in Moulton, Alabama the son of the late James William and Sarah Elizabeth (Wright) Armstrong. Mr. Armstrong served his country faithfully in the United States Army during World War II, being honorably discharged in 1946.
On February 1, 1947, Emmett married Nell Irene Blair in Cullman, Alabama and together raised 2 sons.
He went to work for General Motors in the early 50's where he worked for over 30 years, retiring in 1985 from the V-8 Engine Plant in Flint. Mr. Armstrong was a member of the UAW Local 659. He enjoyed country music and was a big Tigers baseball fan.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Irene; 2 sons: Lonnie (Linda) Armstrong of Au Gres, MI, formerly of Owosso and Ronald (Sally) Armstrong of Owosso; 3 grandchildren: Joshua, Ashten and Aaron (AJ) as well as several nieces.
Mr. Armstrong was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Valerie S. Armstrong; 1 brother and 2 sisters.
