WHEATLEY, Marie "Marty" Yvonne - Age 71, of Flint was called home, peacefully surrounded by her family, on Monday, June 16, 2014. Funeral services will be held 1PM Friday, June 20, 2014 at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Road, Swartz Creek. Rev. Ernest Davis officiating. Interment at Sunset Hills Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 18 and Thursday, June 19 from 2 PM to 8 PM.
Marty was one of five children born to Walter L. and Alice Fitzgerald on April 26, 1943 in Dorchester, Massachusetts and spent most of her childhood in New York.
Some of Marty's favorite activities included serving on a women's Pool league for several years, getting lost in a good book and most importantly, her love of meeting people. Marty was very much a "people person" creating lots of memories and longtime friendships that spanned over the course of her lifetime during her career as a bartender for nearly 50 years. Marty's zest for life took her to places such as New York & Arizona; however, she eventually "planted her roots" in Flint, Michigan during the '60's.
Marty dabbled in a few occupations, such as becoming the first female fuel pumper in Flint in the '60's and additionally, working as a glove sorter at Container Specialties. It was there that she would meet and later on September 25, 2000, marry her true love and soul mate, Terry L. Wheatley. Although Marty enjoyed different occupational experiences, somehow she always felt at home and seemed happiest in her return to bartending, in which continued to nurture her love of people through her longstanding employment with local establishments such as Dunn Inn, Whiskey Jack's, Whisper Lounge and Westside/Corunna Road Bar. Marty was never short on offering a smile & sharing a laugh or two!
Marty is preceded in death by her brother, Walter L Fitzgerald Jr; her oldest son, Samuel G. Broughton; and her granddaughter, Sara "Peanut" Broughton. She is survived by her loving husband, Terry L. Wheatley; daughters, Belinda M. Broughton of Mt. Morris, and Michelle D. Broughton-Nagy of Tucson, AZ; her son, James A. Broughton of Flint; stepdaughter and son-in-law, Melanie and Pat Fatuesi of El Paso, TX, and stepdaughter, Michelle Wooden of Flint. Marty is also survived by her grandchildren, Jamie Marie Y. Broughton of Mt. Morris, Jason A. Broughton and Jessica Kenton of Flint, Jeffrey Burnett and Jordan Burnett of Tucson, AZ, Samantha Broughton of Prudenville, Richard N. Arceneaux and Caleb Wilson of Mt. Morris, Luka Fatuesi of El Paso, Nathan, Natalie and Noah Wooden of Flint; several great grandchildren.
