Brenda Sue Thomas, 68, passed away at her daughter’s home in Petoskey, Michigan on September 23, 2016, surrounded by family.
Born in Holcomb, Missouri on November 29, 1947, Brenda moved to Flint
with her family as a child. She grew up with her two brothers, Connie and
Morris and her cousins Ray and Larry who lived across the street, and reveled that she could play football with the boys- - and throw a tighter spiral than all of them.
In July of 1968, she met Butch Thomas and married him six weeks later, eloping in a mint-green dress. Six years later, their only child Tamara was born, and Brenda chose to be a stay-at-home mom. She was there for everything from spelling bees to 5th grade operettas and never missed a single volleyball or softball game.
She faithfully attended Baring Cross Baptist Church, where she served as the church pianist for 30 years. Some of her most treasured memories were made with her friends from church - - camping at Higgins Lake, robust games of Trivial Pursuit, and just getting together playing cards.
In 2003, Butch and Brenda moved “up north” to their dream home, where she enjoyed cooking meals for family and friends in her dream kitchen, playing pool with Butch, planting a vegetable garden, watching the deer mosey around the backyard, and rooting for the Detroit Tigers.
Stubborn and determined, Brenda would not let cancer stand in her way of crossing adventures off her bucket list. Three weeks ago, she found herself flying in a helicopter over northern Michigan with her brother Morris and parasailing with her daughter and granddaughter later that same day.
Brenda was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Butch Thomas, on May 16, 2016. She was also preceded by her parents, Marson and Mildred Hall and her brother, Connie Hall.
She is survived by her daughter Tamara, son-in-law Jon and granddaughter Hannah Begos of Petoskey; her brother Morris Hall and fiancee Cindy Smith of Flint; brother and sister-in-law Ron and Patsy Franks of Eau Claire, Michigan, nieces Deb and Deanna; brother-in-law Alvin and nephew Andy of Benton Harbor; nephew Greg Trail of Eau Claire; and a host of friends from Baring Cross, Standish Baptist, and Twining Baptist Church.
The family thanks Dr. Irene Connelly and her staff, the Infusion Center crew,
Dr. Paul Blanchard, and Dr. Isaac Kaufman and his staff as well as the hospice nurses and aides for their compassionate care. The family would also like to thank the many friends who have shown their love to us in so many ways - - with calls, texts, emails, cards, meals, and visits. We are so blessed to have such wonderful people in our lives.
Brenda’s home-going celebration will be Monday, September 26th at 1pm at
Lee-Ramsay Funeral Home - Standish Chapel with Pastor Dave Evans officiating. The family will receive visitors from 11 a.m. until the time of the service, as well as on Sunday, September 25th from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
and 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home in Standish. She will be interred in Greenwood Cemetery in Petoskey. In lieu of flowers, Brenda’s family asks
that you take your loved ones out for a nice dinner and remember her fondly.
