Alton Eugene (Spike) Sweers

October 30, 1929 – November 3, 2024

Alton Sweers of Burton, MI, passed away early Sunday morning surrounded by his loving family. Alton was born at his family’s farm located on Potter Road in Burton, Michigan on October 30th, 1929. He was the youngest of three children born to Kenneth and Mary Sweers.

Al graduated from Kearsley High School in 1948. During these formative years he developed many lifelong friendships, and an intense love for competitive sports, both of which he maintained a deep passion for his entire lifetime. Al enjoyed playing football and was a catcher for several baseball teams but focused on golf in his later years. He was an extremely proud Michigan outdoor sport enthusiast and shared his joy for hunting and fishing with his sons Carl, Mark, and his daughter Karen. Al also cherished his cottage on Heart Lake in Waters, MI, especially the annual family vacations.

Nothing was more important to Al than his family. He met the love of his life, Iris Marsa, in high school, and they were married on September 29th, 1951, just prior to his deployment with the United States Army. After his honorable discharge he returned to his family’s farm, but eventually joined the General Motors Corporation where he was employed for thirty-nine years in supervision until his retirement.

Al is survived by his beloved wife of 73 years, his two children, Mark Sweers and Karen (Jim Sibilsky) Johnson. His daughter-in-law Phyllis (Bryan) Howe, his four grandchildren, who he dearly loved, Erik (Kris) Sweers, Dr. Meggan (Tauzzari) Robinson, Lauren (Tim) Riley, and Ted Sweers, and his four great grandchildren Max, Elyse, Brayden and Addi. In addition to numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his son Carl Sweers; his two sisters, Marion (James) Magyar and Doris (Wendall) Champion. A private Memorial Service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Boys and Girls Club of Flint in Alton’s memory.
