Of Flint, age 60, died Saturday, May 25, 2019 at his residence.
Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 30, 2019 at Central Church of the Nazarene, G-1261 West Bristol Road, Flint, Pastor Dave Hintz and Pastor Rob Prince co-officiating.
Burial in Flint Memorial Park.
Visitation 12 p.m. Thursday at church until the time of the service.
Charles was born in Flint, MI to Ray and Vera Nelson.
He graduated from Ainsworth HS in 1977 and from Arkansas College in 1981 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Vocal Music Education. He studied Choral Conducting at EMU, where he met the love of his life, Diane Wooden, singing in the same choir, and they married in 1984. His teaching career began with directing Science Fair Workshops at the Flint Children’s Museum, and continued with 24 years in the Flint Schools, teaching elementary music the majority of that time.
Charles grew up worshipping at Christ UMC in Burton and the last 20 years at Central Nazarene. His faith was always a key part of his life, whether singing, leading, teaching, serving, or working Tech, he dearly loved all of the wonderful people he had the privilege to work with and serve. His passions included holography, astronomy, photography, camping, playing the bagpipes, supporting other bariatric patients, working with his parrots, and painting landscapes Bob Ross style.
He was preceded in death by his mother and Aunt Joann, and is survived by his wife, father, brother, ER Nelson, uncles Herb (Audree) Nelson and Robert (Sue) Nelson, and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
In lieu of flowers or plants, memorial contributions can be made to Flint Central Church of the Nazarene Worship Arts Ministry.
