SUTHERLAND, Richard F. - Age 87, of Swartz Creek, died July 29, 2013 at McLaren, Flint Services will be 1 PM Thursday, August 1 at Sharp Funeral Homes, 8138 Miller Road, Swartz Creek. Visitation will be 11 AM - 1 PM Thursday, August 1. Those desiring may make contributions to the Swartz Creek VFW Post 3720 or St. Jude Children 's Hospital.
Richard was born November 30, 1925 in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Chester and Pearl (Barnes) Sutherland. He was a graduate of Fremont High School in Lander Wyoming. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the U.S.Navy. He married Shelba Jean Pettit on July 1, 1966 in Grand Blanc. Richard worked as a pipefitter for GM Chevrolet Manufacturing retiring in 1988 with 28 years of service. He was a member of the VFW Post 3720, American Legion Post 413, and a former member of the Masonic Lodge # 23 F.& A.M.
Richard enjoyed all sports including golfing, and watching the Detroit Lions and NASCAR. He mostly enjoyed being in the company of family and friends.
Surviving are: wife of 47 years, Shelba; two granddaughters Kayla and Kristin Doshier; niece Yvonne Ingle; many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews from Shelba's family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Ruth Hickey; nephew Bill Hickey; and daughter Rhonda Setterington on June 15, 2013.
