CATES, John Wayne - Of Flint, age 80, died Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at McLaren-Flint surrounded by family and friends.
Funeral service will be held 1pm Saturday, May 19, 2018 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint.
Cremation will take place following the service.
In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make contributions to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, The Genesee District Library or the Genesee County Humane Society.
Visitation 2-4pm and 6-8pm Friday and 12pm Saturday until the time of the service at the funeral home.
John was born in Truman, Arkansas on May 10, 1938, the son of the late Jasper and Dorothy (Blakemore) Cates. In 1956, John graduated from Beecher High School and attended Mott Community College.
He married Katherine Middleton at St. Matthew Church on November 4, 1961. John was employed by General Motors from 1960-1996 as a Journeyman tool and die maker at Fisher I. He was a UAW representative for 20 years as a committeeman. He also took great pride in serving as a shop committeeman for Skilled Trades. In addition, he co-owned and operated three Steak Escape restaurants in Michigan. John was an avid University of Michigan sports fan. He also loved the Detroit Lions and Detroit Tigers and always supported them. Above all, John was very proud of his children and his greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren and took great pride in what they had accomplished.
Surviving are wife, Katherine;
son, John (Stephanie) Cates;
daughter, Mary Elizabeth Wood and former son-in-law, Bryan M. Wood;
grandchildren, Jeff (Amber) Cates, John Cates, Angelica Cates and Elizabeth Wood;
He was also honored to be Great Grandpa to Brianna and Sara Cates;
He is survived by brother-in-law, Patrick Middleton and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his dear son, Jeffery, brothers, Jim, Leroy, sister, Freddie and brother-in-law, Richard Middleton.
