Marsa, James Michael of Flint and Port Huron, age 68, lost his 11 year battle with COPD at Select Specialty Hospital inside McLaren Flint on January 13, 2016. Jim was born in Flint, Michigan on January 30, 1947 to the late Howard and Reita (Ludwig) Marsa as the youngest of 5 siblings. Jim was referred to as “Jimmy” by his Port Huron Family. As a boy, Jim enjoyed visiting his Port Huron Family for pheasant hunting and summer beach fun. He also loved to ice skate at Ballenger Park where his sisters worked. Jim’s childhood dog was Jiggs. Jim played baseball and a little bit of basketball. He took up golf at age 13. His dad was his instructor. Jim went on to become a scratch golfer. He graduated from Flint Southwestern in 1965. Jim served in Vietnam as a helicopter gunner. He worked for GM for 34 years as a salary employee in the engineering department with waste chemicals. Muff was Jim’s dog that he shared with his girls. Jim adored his girls! Jim loved to travel, go sightseeing and people watch! He was a Mr. Fix-It…he was handy, he could remodel, repair, or start from scratch. He could fix anything. So when he was diagnosed with COPD and later RA, he thought nothing of climbing on ladders with his oxygen to put vinyl siding on the garage! Jim enjoyed KFC…chicken was his all-time favorite food. He was an avid fan of hockey, especially the Red Wings. The Oakland Raiders and the Miami Hurricanes were his favorite football teams. Jim followed the LPGA and the PGA weekly. He was even into the fashion aspect of the golf attire. Jim followed most other sports just to be knowledgeable for conversation purposes. You could always catch Jim relaxing with Crossword and Sudoku Puzzles. He also enjoyed living in Port Huron at the cottage, watching the freighters come and go. Jim was a loving, caring and humorous husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.
Jim is survived by his wife, Dorothy Jackson; children, Tina (Eric) Mertz of MA, Lori Ivy of FL, Nicole (Ken) Miller of VA; grandchildren Eric (Theresa) Payne of FL, Kimberly Mertz of MA, Ashley Ivy of FL, Jennifer (Kris) Colvin of NY, Jon Ivy of FL, Seaira Ivy Whitman of SC, Cassie Mertz of AZ; great grandchildren Kaiden, Mariah and Robert Payne of FL, Landon and Anthony Ivy of FL, Will and Lizzie Crandell of AZ; sisters Carolyn Stoops of Flushing, Linda Kirby of Flint; brothers-in-law Carl Smelko of CA, Ray (Carol) Delbridge of Swartz Creek, Vern (Karen) Delbridge of Linden; sisters-in-law Rosemary (Dale) Bock of MN, Sieglinde Delbridge of OK; aunt Betty Tobin of Brown City; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
