DIENER, Carl A. – of Flint, age 78, passed away March 10, 2013, at home, after a long, courageous battle with multiple myeloma. A Funeral Service will be held 1 p.m. Friday, March 15, 2013, at Allen Funeral Home, 9136 Davison Rd., Davison, MI; Rev. P. Thomas Wachterhauser officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery, Tawas City, MI. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Wednesday and 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Thursday. On Friday, there will be visitation for one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Big Brothers/Big Sisters or the American Cancer Society.

Carl was born in Saginaw, MI on August 4, 1934, son of the late Rubin and Bertha (Stange) Diener. He was a five-time all-state athlete at Saginaw Arthur Hill High School. Carl went to Michigan State University where he played football, participating in MSU’s first trip to the Rose Bowl in 1954. He also was an Academic All-American, and graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. After graduating, and a short stint in the Army, Carl began working at AC Spark Plug Division and retired from GM with 39 years of service. Carl married Margaret Mark in December 1955. Carl’s passion was coaching and mentoring young people. He spent many years coaching at St. Leo, Holy Rosary and Kearsley schools, both in official and volunteer capacities. He was a Big Brother in the Big Brother/Big Sister organization for over 40 years.

Carl is survived by his wife of more than 57 years, Margaret; children, Timothy (Lisa Brown-Diener), Dawn (Donald) Jones, Pamela Diener, Matthew (Lynelle) and Christopher (Tara Dosumu-Diener); grandchildren, Jessica, Tyler, Isaac, Samuel, Sarah, Rowan and Ava; brothers, Harold and Richard (Cheryl) Diener. He was preceded in death by sisters, Louise Diener and Edna VonBerg; brothers, David and Norman Diener. Carl’s family gives a special thanks to the doctors and nurses at Great Lakes Cancer Center for 16 years of support and compassionate care.
