HELFRICH, Steven James I. – of Clio, age 53, died Wednesday, May 6, 2015 at Genesys Health Park in Grand Blanc. Honoring his wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of Steven’s life will be held at 11AM Monday, May 11, 2015 at the O’Guinn Family Funeral Home in Montrose. Pastor Bruce Lawton officiating. Inurnment in Montrose Township Cemetery at a later date. Family will receive visitors at the funeral home on Saturday from 11AM until 7PM and on Monday from 10AM until the time of service at 11AM. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or American Diabetes Association.
Steven was born on July 16, 1961 in Flint, Michigan to James and Betty (Sholler) Helfrich. He graduated from Hill McCloy High School in 1979. Steven earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Business from Michigan State University in 1983 and was very involved with the jazz band. He was the manager at the Greenery Restaurant for many years and later a Contractor for Helfrich Builders. Steven was a very accomplished trumpet player and enjoyed playing in many music groups; most recently: Sauce Cats and Souled Out. Music was always a big part of Steven’s life. He enjoyed fishing, boating and collecting antiques. Above all, Steven was very family oriented and loved spending time with his son.
Surviving are: Son, Steven James Helfrich II of Clio; Parents: James and Betty Helfrich of Montrose; Brother, Jeffrey Helfrich (brother in law Paul Pappas) of Clarkston; Sister, Karen Valdivia of Montrose; Nephews: Gabriel and Nathan Valdivia; Niece, Adrienne Valdivia; Aunt, Carol Grant; Uncle, Norman (Linda) Sholler; Many cousins, other loving family members and friends.
