CHILDERS, Iola Marie age 91 passed away on Saturday February 22, 2020 surrounded by her family at Ascension Genesys Hospital in Grand Blanc, Michigan. A memorial visitation will be held at Reigle Funeral Home, 5501 West Pierson Road, Flushing, Michigan on Sunday, March 1, 2020 starting at 10am with a Memorial Service to follow at 11am. Pastor Bill Jentzen will be officiating. Per her wishes, cremation has taken place. Iola will be inurned at Great Lakes National Cemetery along with her beloved husband Bob at a later date.
Iola was born on August 14, 1928 to late parents, John and Marie (Holdorph) Thompson. One of her earliest ambitions in life was to become and airline stewardess, but rather than taking to the skies, she found her calling as a loving wife to Bob Childers and mother to five children and later as a bank teller at Chemical Bank in Clare. She retired in 1988 after 20 years of helping her customers with their banking and taking pride in doing a job well done.
Iola enjoyed a good game of golf and one of her fondest memories was getting a hole in one the first year of playing golf. She walked the Mackinaw Bridge every Labor Day for 30 years. She loved wintering in Texas, playing pool and going on a Hawaiian Cruise with her soul mate Joe McKellar. Iola enjoyed shooting pool and playing cards with her friends at Cedarwood apartments, traveling out west to see her family, weekends at Higgins Lake at her sister Dixie’s cottage and estate sales on Saturday afternoons with her daughter Teresa.
Iola is survived by her children: Catherine (Ron) Eckert, Teresa (Bill Ude) Childers, Gary (Hollie) Childers, John (Bobby) Childers; grandchildren: Aaron (Marisa) Childers, Trisha Childers, Jennifer Childers, Joshua (Carissa) Heiss, Seth(Becky) Heiss, Daniel Heiss, Michael (Brittany) Childers, Julie Childers and 7 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Bob; daughter, Brenda Childers and granddaughters Brenda Heiss and Claire Heiss.
