Dr. Richard A. "Dick" Antell -- of Flint, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on November 19, 2014. He was 83. At Dick's request, no public service will be held. In lieu of gifts, the family requests that donations be sent to the McLaren Foundation, 401 S. Ballenger Hwy., Flint MI 48532 or a charity of one's choice.

Dick was born in Brooklyn, NY on July 20, 1931 to Dr. Henry and Dora Antell. His father was a well respected and innovative public high school principal and his mother was a substitute teacher. They instilled in Dick an appreciation for the importance of education, and Dick excelled in school from an early age. Growing up, he loved participating in sports and attending sporting events, and he particularly loved the Brooklyn Dodgers. Nothing thrilled him more as a kid than attending a Dodger game at Ebbets Field. And if you asked him nicely, he might admit to sneaking into a local tavern every now and then in his later teenage years where he described the age of consent as "anyone who was tall enough to see over the bar."

After graduating from high school at 16, Dick attended Cornell University on an academic scholarship. At Cornell, Dick continued to excel, and upon graduation in 1952, he was admitted to medical school at Cornell University, from which he graduated and received his medical degree in 1956. He then interned in Buffalo, NY, for one year. Dick then enlisted as an officer in the United States Air Force, serving with distinction for 2 years as a flight surgeon, achieving the rank of Captain. After completing his military service, Dick was admitted to the Internal Medicine Residency Program at McLaren Hospital, Flint, and the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. As Dick spent time in Michigan, he grew to love it, and upon completing his residency program in 1962, Dick decided to make Flint his home, which it was for the next 50 years.

In 1962, Dick was welcomed into medical practice with fellow Flint Internists, Dr. Clayton Stroup and Dr. Quincy Fan, with whom he practiced in partnership for many years. Dick steadily built his medical practice through compassion and caring, and through hard, dedicated work. He cared deeply about his patients and they loved him. He was similarly well respected and appreciated by his colleagues and staff, many of whom he worked with for 40 years or more. He served as both a teacher and mentor to young medical professionals, for whom he always made time. He was a past president of the Michigan Heart Association and served as the physician for Flint Goodwill for 5 years.

In 1971, Dick married the love of his life, Marthalee "Marty", with whom he enjoyed the remainder of his life. Marty loved and supported Dick and he loved and supported her, and they had a wonderful life together. In Dick's free time, he loved to vacation with Marty and their seven children, especially to places where he could enjoy the outdoors. His favorite spots included Traverse City, northern Ontario, and the rocky Atlantic Coast of the American Northeast. In the summer he liked nothing more than to pack a picnic lunch and a cooler, and head to one of Flint's nearby lakes with his family for a day of sunshine and fun. When he was at home, he loved to work in his yard, getting rid of the weeds, growing tomatoes, and fixing his feeders to attract song birds and even enjoyed feeding the squirrels. He loved to eat, and talk, and laugh, and he genuinely enjoyed life.

In addition to his wife Marty, Dick is survived by six children, Janet Rogers of Danville, CA, Kenneth Antell (wife Renee Stineman) of Portland Oregon, Timothy Doty (wife Marilu) of San Diego, CA, Robert Antell, of Pompano Beach, FL, Shawn Doty and Jeff Antell, both of Flint; his brother Steven (wife Linda Schwartz) of Brooklyn NY; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; many other family members. They will miss him very much. He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Brian Scott Doty.
