Spaleny, Helen of Flushing, age 94, died Saturday, February 22, 2020, at her home. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday, February 28, 2020, at Rossell Funeral Home. Fr. Anthony Brooks will officiate. Burial will follow at Flushing Cemetery. Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to St. Robert Catholic Church.
Helen was born on January 18, 1926, in Elsie, Michigan, the daughter of Joe and Rose Batora. She was the second oldest of four children. She worked in the banking industry as a bookkeeper for numerous loan companies and banks which at the time was an industry made up of predominantly men. She lived in St. Louis, Missouri for a couple years and then moved back to Michigan, settling in Lansing where she meet William “Bill” Spaleny. They fell in love and where married in 1961. They lived in an apartment for eight months and then purchased a home in Flushing, Mi. Being unable to have kids, they would adopt two boys, Steven and Phillip. They raised their sons and had a wonderful life together and were married 51 years before Bill passed away in 2012, in the same home they shared all of their wonderful memories. Helen wanted to pass in their home, in bed, just as Bill had previously and in her sleep in the early hours of February 22, she did just that. Helen had just turned 94 in January and four days before that, her and Bill would have married 59 years. She enjoyed time with her family, cooking and reading but her passion was taking care of others. She was a member of the rosary group at St. Roberts church and spent hours and hours over the years serving people at the Flint soup kitchen, helping out in the church kitchen for weddings and funerals and delivering communion to people at the local nursing homes.
She is survived by her sons, Philip Spaleny, Steve and wife Erika Spaleny; grandsons, TJ and Tony; brother, Joe Batora, sister-in-law, Delores (Ed’s wife); many nieces and nephews and dear friends. Helen is preceded in death by her husband Bill, her brothers, Frank and Ed, sister-in-law. Pauline (Joe’s wife) and virtually all her life-long friends.
