Donald Joseph Mosher, age 85, of Burton, formerly of Lapeer, died Thursday, March 5, 2020. He was born February 24, 1935 in Flint, Michigan.

Donald grew up in Columbiaville and graduated from Lapeer High School in 1953. He then found employment at General Motors Corporation in Flint in the skilled trades, as a die-maker, completing his apprenticeship at Kettering University (formerly General Motors Institute).

During his time at GM, he became involved with the UAW, and eventually became the Thumb Area UAW-CAP Chairman. He has also served as a member of the General Boards for the Michigan branches of UAW-CAP and the AFL-CIO, and was a Joint Council Delegate for 26 years. Mr. Mosher received the Walter P. Reuther Distinguished Service Award, given to union members who have authenticated 20 years of notable service to the UAW.

His tenure with the UAW sparked a fire within him of strong civic responsibility and social activism. He has been active in the Boy Scouts of America, Lapeer County Parks and Recreation Commission, Lapeer County Economic Club, Lapeer Masonic Lodge #54, Lapeer Family Literacy, MSU Alumni Association and the Lapeer & Genesee County FEMA Committee.

On the political front, Donald was constantly active in campaigns of the local, state, and federal levels, serving on various committees and participating as a delegate and Presidential Elector. He was proud to say that he had attended five presidential inaugurations. Donald was a longtime member of the Lapeer County Democratic Party, which established an annual award in his honor…the Don J. Mosher Founders Award. In 2014 he actually received the award established in his honor, from the Lapeer Democratic Party.

Donald is survived by his children: Mike (Carole) Mosher of Lapeer and Julia (Patrick) McKenna of Davison; grandchildren: Michaela Mosher of Detroit, Matthew (Emily) Hotchkiss of Birch Run, Jessica Hotchkiss of Ypsilanti, Meredith (Kyle) VanKoevering of Ann Arbor, Shawn (Matt) Erickson of Chicago, Brad (Stephanie) McKenna of Oakland Twp. and Ryan McKenna of Davison; and great-grandchildren: Owen, Mimi, Hannah, Malachi, Bennett, Levi, Joel, Samuel and Madeline. He was preceded in death by his first wife: Dorothy Mosher Stock; and his parents: Joseph and Grace (Elders) Mosher.

A memorial service in honor of Mr. Mosher’s life will be held at 3:00PM Friday, May 1, 2020, at Lapeer American Legion Post #16, 1701 West Genesee St., Lapeer, MI 48446. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, from 2-3PM Friday, May 1, 2020, at the American Legion. Pastor Matthew Hotchkiss will officiate the service, which will be followed immediately by a funeral luncheon. Memorial contributions may be made to Lapeer Community Scholarship & Student Loan Fund, 250 Second Street, Lapeer, MI 48446.
