SIMONI, Mario - Of Grand Blanc, age 88, died Monday, March 26, 2018 at Maple Place.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:30am Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at Holy Family Church, 11824 South Saginaw, Grand Blanc, MI, Monsignor Jerry Vincke officiating.
Cremation will take place following the service.
Contributions may be made to Genesee County Humane Society or the American Cancer Society.
Visitation 2-8pm Monday April 2, 2018 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint. A Rosary will be prayed 7pm Monday evening at the funeral home. Additional visitation 10am Tuesday at church until the time of the Mass.
Mario was born in Patrica, Italy on March 14, 1930, the son of the late Osvaldo and Maria (Montini) Simoni. On January 7, 1954, he married Margherita Toppetta. Mario migrated to the United States in 1954 looking to work in the steel mills of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and ended up in Detroit, Michigan working as a concrete contractor. Mario then moved to Flint and worked for General Motors for 10 years. He moonlighted at Ruggero’s Restaurant where he learned the trade of running an Italian restaurant. In 1963, he opened Mario’s Restaurant and Pizzeria on Fenton Road. Mario retired in 1980 and moved to Escondido, California. In 1984, he opened, with his son, Sergio, Mario’s Restaurant and Pizzeria in California. Mario was an avid gardener and loved watching sporting events and watching his grandchildren’s sporting events too. Mario also loved to golf and snowmobile with his sons and spending time with his family.
Surviving are wife of 64 years, Margherita (Toppetta) Simoni;
sons, Frank (Sheri) Simoni, Jerry (Selina) Simoni, Sergio (and special companion, Joyce Snider) Simoni;
grandchildren, Mario (Katherine) Simoni, Alaina (Michael) James, Sonnie (Justin) Fister, and Kylee Simoni;
great-grandchildren, Rocco James, Romley James and Jackson Fister.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Irida and brothers, Aldo, Silvino and Pietro Simoni.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to the outstanding staff of the Maple Place Assisted Living of Grand Blanc for their wonderful care.
