HUFFMAN, Dr. James F. – Of Flint Township, age 92, died Thursday, June 19, 2014 at McLaren-Flint.
Funeral service will be held 4pm Thursday, June 26, 2014 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint, Elder Jay Hager officiating.
Cremation will take place following the service.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Kiwanis and St. Cecelia Society.
Visitation 12pm Thursday until the time of the service at the funeral home.
James was born in Kalamazoo on May 1, 1922, the son of Floyd and Carrie Huffman and was a resident of the Flint area since 1952. He was a Captain in the Army Air Force in the Pacific Theater during World War II. James married Martha Neal on June 9, 1946 in Salem, Indiana. He received his Bachelors and Masters at Northwestern University and his Doctorate from Michigan State University. He was past President of Flint Area Council of Churches, past President of the Downtown Kiwanis and past president of the Flint Symphony Orchestra. James taught adult Sunday school at Court Street Methodist Church, where he was a member. Dr. Huffman was a Professor for 45 years at GMI/Kettering. He was the Flint Township Trustee for many years, a faculty liaison to Beta Theta Pi and an honorary member of Junior St. Cecelia Society. He also worked at the Planetarium as a lecturer. He was the head of the Boy Scouts of Flint and keynote speaker at John Hay Museum in Salem, Indiana.
Surviving are two children, David (Karen King) Huffman,
Ann (Tom) Palentyn;
three grandchildren, Eric Huffman (Bethany Boehmer), Erica (David) O’Toole and Nicole (Nick) Goode;
sister, Peggy Walters, brothers, Pat (Patti) Huffman, Robert (Peggy) Huffman and Sherman (Judy) Huffman;
several brothers and sisters-in-law;
several nieces and nephews;
special friends, Jay Hager and Cynthia Ellard.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha, on January 27, 2005.
