Charlene was born in Findley, Ohio on May 1, 1957, the daughter of Charles and Marcella (Childers) Pancoast. From her childhood, Charlene loved horses, reading, and learning.
On May 17, 1980, Charlene married Les Melton in Battle Creek, Michigan. Adoption had been in their hearts from the beginning. God gave them the desire of their hearts in the adoptions of three beautiful children: Scott (1984) and Craig (1987) of Guatemala and Rosalie (1991) of Honduras. Her children brought her great joy and she loved them with every ounce of her being. She poured out her heart into their lives. To the end, they were uppermost in her heart and mind.
Extended family was also important to Charlene, and she loved the times she had with them when visiting in the States.
At a young age, Charlene felt the call to be a Missionary to Spanish-speaking people. To prepare for this ministry, she became an RN and then earned her Bachelor’s Degree in bilingual education from Albion College. She was an excellent Bible Quizzer in her teens and a lifelong member of the Pentecostal Church of God.
A devoted and faithful wife, Charlene was a true partner with Les in their missions ministry. She was a full-time Missionary for 38 years (24 years in Honduras and 14 years in Guatemala).
Charlene enjoyed visiting churches, especially in the indigenous villages in Guatemala. She made a point of connecting with women in rural mountain villages who spoke indigenous dialects. She was passionate about inspiring Pastors’ Kids and Missionary Interns to be the best they could possibly be in serving Jesus, and Missionary Kids held a special place in her heart.
