Main Street, Flushing, Reverend Debbie Line-Yencer officiating. Interment will follow immediately in Flushing Cemetery.
Charlotte was born May 6, 1930 in Flint, MI to Lyman and Mildred (Laymon) Cook. She moved to Davison as a child and lived on Potter Rd. until her mother relocated the family to Gosport, Indiana, following the sudden death of Charlotte’s father in 1941. Charlotte only attended Gosport High School her senior year and always thought of herself as a 1947 Davison graduate. On February 17, 1949, she married Douglas L. Johnston, her beloved dance partner until his death on September 1, 2005. They lived briefly in Flint before moving to Flushing, and then to Swartz Creek after their children graduated. A multi-talented floral designer and creator, she worked for the Flower Basket and Gordon Anthony Florist. She also became employed at Chevrolet Manufacturing and later SPO, in accounts payable, from which she retired in 1985 after 23 years of service. A gifted pianist, Charlotte taught many, many students from her home and continued to play until her last hospitalization.
She was a lifetime member of the Montrose Order of Eastern Star 351 and the Elf Khurafeh Ladies Oriental Shrine and served as SAHAR Oriental Band Directress for several years and was a lifetime member of The Flushing United Methodist Church, also belonging to the Irene Circle.
She loved all dance, from ballroom to square dancing, enjoyed roller skating and learning to play new instruments, like the glockenspiel and the banjo. She was a master of knowledge of old Westerns and classic films, loved gardening, decorating and taking pride in her appearance. She was stylish right to the end.
Charlotte felt herself blessed to have reconnected in 2009 with Davison classmate, Ralph Diehl, after they had each lost their spouses. Their 8-year love story gave them a new energy for life and they especially enjoyed spending their winters in Mesa, Arizona. He survives her with love.
Charlotte is also survived by cherished daughters, Julianne and husband Paul Schmidt, Marcia and husband John Henson, dear sister and brother-in-law Donna and Richard Glover, loving grand-daughters Shelby West and Kelli (Tim) Hetzer, Michael (Jennifer) Henson, Debbie Morey, Greg (Joy) Lewis, dearly loved great-grandchildren, Charlotte, Novalee, Kaitlyn, Conner and Lucas, Savanna, Matthew, Jacob and Caden, many nieces and nephews and countless treasured friends.
She counted among the blessings in her life the ladies of Warren Avenue, of which Eunice Wager survives, Jan Sequin, Nancy Oberman, her dear friends from Davison High, Joyce, Bea, Anna Mae, and the late Donna Schreiber. The many doctors, nurses and other medical staff who took such good care of her deserve thanks, particularly those at Spring Vale whose care was exceptional and could always make her smile.
She was predeceased by her husband, Douglas, son, David, parents, brother Tom and sister-in-law Mary Lou Cook, nephew Michael Cook, grandson Bradley Lewis, her parents-in-law and all of her brothers-in-law and their wives, several nephews and a niece.
Donations may be made to the Shriner’s Transportation Unit or The Flushing United Methodist Church. Envelopes available at the funeral home. In Charlotte’s name, make a new friend.
