John was born on October 18, 1938, to the late John and Dorothy (Kapp) Newcomer, in Whigville, Michigan. John was lovingly cared for by family, as he battled cancer in his last few months of life. He was surrounded by the comfort of many friends and family who prayed for and visited him. John served his country and was a veteran of the United States Navy.
John had many passions and talents. He had a strong faith life and loved talking about the Lord with anyone who crossed his path. He served as head usher and funeral meal coordinator and at New Covenant Church, where he was a member for 45 years. In his years of raising children, he kept it a priority to take his family camping through a traveling camping club, “Wagon Wheels.” He spent his life owning and operating his own trailer supply and heating and cooling company, “Wind Drift Trailer Supplies,”for 40 years. He served God and his community in many areas: He attended and served the Lord at New covenant church for 40 years; Masonic Temple for 50 years; Boy Scout leader for 35 years; Blueberry Festival Committee for 35 years; Council member on Montrose City Council and Trustee for Montrose Township, and he served as an Election inspector for City and Township. His knowledge for repairing and installing heating and cooling units became well known and he was called upon by many friends, family and neighbors to “come take a look at this.” He faithfully served the Montrose Fire Department for 45 years and retired as Assistant Fire Chief. He was known for his extensive firefighter memorabilia collection. John enjoyed tinkering and making home improvements. He was a “John” of all trades – he helped others in the areas of roofing, flooring, re-building, remodeling, electrical, plumbing and heating and cooling. He was patient and calm – he had a natural gift to “teach” others and pass on his talents. John especially enjoyed traveling to his cabin in Hale and spending time with family. He generously opened his cabin to family and friends. He liked hosting family reunions, picnics and Fourth of July celebrations. The family especially gives thanks to the nurses of Kindred Hospice who provided caring nursing services and shared their compassion.
John is survived by his children: John Charles (Jodette) Newcomer II; Jeffery (Amanda) Newcomer; and Jenean Newcomer Haapala; grandchildren: Christa (Matt) Zawol, John Newcomer III; Makenzie Newcomer, Griffen Mascioli, Ethan Haapala, Emma Mullens and baby Christopher John; siblings Betty Ruddy, Robert (Barb) Mackenzie, Mary Lou (Tom) Briggs; and many nieces and nephews he spent quality time with. He was preceded in death by his three-year old daughter Jan; parents, John and Dorothy; sisters Jane Lewis and Carol Britt; brothers-in law Jerry Lewis, Ralph Ruddy, Cecil Clolinger and Dorian Britt.
