LENESCHMIDT, Mary Eileen (Voorhies), Age 93, passed from this life to heaven to be with her Lord on April 13, 2014. She was born on a farm just south of Gaines on May 1, 1920 to Harry and Mary (Atherton) Voorhies. Mary lived all her life in the Gaines area and village of Gaines. She graduated from Gaines High school in 1937 and attended college for one year before marrying Charles Leneschmidt. They lived in Gaines village where they raised three children. Mary kept the books/records for her husband, Charles, who was a painting contractor. Later she worked as the secretary to the Principal at Gaines Elementary school, a position she held for 17 years. A life-long member of the Gaines United Methodist Church, she worked for several years as co-editor of the church newsletter. Active in the church, she also taught vacation Bible school and SundaySchool. Mary also worked for two years on the Oakwood Cemetery Board.
She had a great interest in family genealogy and had done many years of genealogical research. She has traced branches of her family tree back to the early 1600’s. Mary was also known as a local historian and a reliable source of Gaines area history, too.
Mary loved people and always had a smile and a kind word. She always saw the good in people and she had the joy of the Lord Jesus Christ. Her great faith that she lived daily was an example to many. She will be sadly missed by her family and her many friends. Surviving are daughter Lynne (Fred) Wells, 5 grandchildren, Nick Danhausen (Kim), Robyn Wells-Pratt (John), Chad Wells, Rick Danhausen, and Jackie McCarty, 7 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren. Predeceased by her husband Charles, daughter Charleen Hamilton, son Jon Leneschmidt, parents Harry and Mary Voorhies, sisters Olive Judson, Zola MacLachlin, and Ruth Fink, brothers, Donald Voorhies and Carl Voorhies. Special thanks to Lori Heller for her caring and thoughtful ways. She was a very special friend.
Services will be held 1 PM Thursday, April 17, 2014 at Gaines United Methodist Church, 117 Clinton St., Gaines with Pastor Eric Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Gaines. Visitation will be held 4-8 PM Wednesday at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Rd., Swartz Creek. The family suggests donations be made to Gaines United Methodist Church. Friends may share an online tribute on the obituary page of www.sharpfuneralhomes.com. |
