As we travel back to August 5, 1924, in Flint, Michigan, on that day God presented a precious gift to Thomas and Geneva Bolden, their only daughter Helen Bolden.
Helen has always hearkened to God’s call, she was baptized and received Jesus Christ as her personal savior, starting out as a very young child she attended Canaan Baptist Church (Rev. Alfred L.C. Robbs) for many years and later transferred her membership to Blackwell A.M.E. Zion Church (Rev. Joseph L. Jones).
Educated in the Flint Public Schools, Helen graduated from Flint Central High School and began working for AC Spark Plug, a division of General Motors immediately upon graduation. Helen birthed 2 beautiful children, Constance and Gary and later married the love of her life, Kenneth Owens, all of whom she loved dearly. Along with her husband Kenneth she moved to Sun City West, Arizona in 1995 where she remained a resident until her transition from labor to reward on January 4, 2016.
Helen was involved in many social clubs, including the prestigious 5:00 Elites of Flint, Michigan, and she was crowned a beauty queen in her early life. Helen retired from AC Spark Plug at the tender age of 42 so that she could spend more time doing the things that she loved such as spending time with her grandchildren, sewing, and cooking. She was known as the resident grandmother of Ottawa Hills to all of her grandchildren’s friends. They all knew if they wanted to go swimming at her house that they had to have a note and she would verify that their parents signed it.
Helen was very active in her retirement community doing things she loved, including taking casino trips with other seniors and planning and organizing social events until her illness.
Helen leaves to cherish a rich and God-blessed legacy of eleven loving grandchildren, Michelle Bolden-Butler, Erika Bolden-Pennyman, Leon Anderson II, Dane (Andrea) Baxter, Ashley Wilson, Sheena Wilson, Jose’ Walls, Lyric Daniels, and Channel Wilson all of Phoenix, Arizona, Candace Anderson of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Jeffrey Anderson of Killeen, Texas; thirteen great grandchildren: Devante Pennyman of Southfield, Michigan, Mikael Bard, Ngozi Anderson, Jayden Pruitt, Leon Anderson III, Jenna Daniels-Dahl, Emma Daniels-Dahl, Samantha Wilson, Jordan Wilson, McKenzie Wilson, Isaiah Delarosa, and Daelen Baxter all of Phoenix, Arizona; Erica Butler and Shabria Pennyman of Flint, Michigan; Jackie Pennyman of Nashville, Tennessee, Deanna Lewis of Birmingham, Alabama, and Alexsa Borjas of Indianapolis, Indiana and a host of great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends including Matt and Lueida Grady, John and Diane Johnson, Otis and Vertie Taylor, Stephen and Nancy Fehn, Pete and Angela Peralta, Margie Miles, Diane Brady, Frank and Stella Crawford, and Rev. Anthony Morris and the Blackwell A.M.E. Zion Church Family.
Mrs. Owens was preceded in death by her mother, Geneva Bolden, husband Kenneth Owens, children Gary D. Bolden and Constance Bolden, brothers Thomas and John Bolden, and sister in laws Delores and Stella Bolden -Anderson.
For the Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trump of God and the dead in Christ shall rise first; then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them…” 1 Thessalonians, 4:16-17
