Hanson, Edward K. (Ed) -- Age 77, died January 9, 2018. Visitation will be held 6 PM - 8 PM Monday January 15 at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Road, Swartz Creek. Funeral services and burial will take place at a later date in Clarksville, Iowa.
Ed was born June 4, 1940 in Muscatine, IA, the son of Kenneth E. and Harriet R. (Lieberknecht) Hanson. He graduated high school in 1958 from Columbus Jct. Community Schools and then attended Iowa State University, graduating in 1962 with a BS degree in mechanical engineering.
Ed married Elaine Kay Fischer June 10,1962 in Garnavillo, IA. The couple moved to Flint, MI in late June, 1962, where Ed was hired as a product design engineer by the Buick Div., General Motors Corp.. While employed by GM, he held various technical and engineering management positions. After 44 years with GM, Ed retired in 2006 as an Engineering Group Mgr. and Program Mgr. of Specialty Vehicles.
Throughout his career, Ed was always interested in all aspects of automotive business and design history; and owned, restored and showed several antique vehicles. He was a registered professional engineer in Michigan and a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers and other professional organizations.
Surviving are his wife, Elaine, of 55 years, his daughter Cynthia (Cindy) M. and husband Jeffrey M. Kolb of Clarksville, IA, and son Jeffrey (Jeff) K. Hanson of Flint, MI. Also surviving are Ed’s brother R. David Hanson and wife Claire of Iowa City, IA, Ed’s sisters, Ruth E. and husband David Wilson of Iowa City and Charlotte L. Warren, also of Iowa City as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, stepfather John Warren and stepbrother James Warren.
