ADAMS, Melvin D. - of Birch Run, age 85, passed away Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at St. Mary’s of Michigan. Funeral services will be held at 1PM Monday, March 5, 2018 at the O’Guinn Family Funeral Home in Clio. Full military honors will be conducted under the direction of the American Legion Post #125 of Birch Run. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home on Monday from 11AM until 1PM.
Mel was born February 1, 1933 in Blackey, Kentucky to the late Wilson Adams and Chloe Banks. He spent most of his life in Kentucky until he joined the United States Army and defended his country in the Korean War. He then moved to Michigan, where he spent the remainder of his life. Mel retired from General Motors with 35 years of service. He loved being outdoors and had a passion for stock car racing. For the last 47 years he spent his life with the love of his life, Janet. They raised their family that Mel loved so much, from their children all the way to their great grandchildren. He spent over 50 years as a part of the American Legion. The last several years were spent with the American legion Post #125 of Birch Run, where he met many great people that he loved and enjoyed to be around.
Surviving are: Fiancée, Janet Kiger; Children: Brenda (Chad) Brady, Michael (Amanda) Kiger, Richard Kiger, and a man he looked to as a son, Thurlo Smith Jr.; Grandchildren: Sasha Schmitt, Brandan (Chelsea) Adams, Tira Brady, Olee Nolan, Jessica Kiger, Tabitha Salami, Jordin Kiger, Benjamin Alitz, and Kendra Brady; Great grandchildren: Brantley Adams, Corban Adams, and Ryleigh Adams. Siblings: Steven (Phyllis) Adams, and Audrey Hogg. Mel was also preceded in death by his brothers and sisters: Vernon “Fred” Adams, Ermien Adams, Mattie Bryant, Miona Summers, Winford Adams, and Jessie James Adams.
