James Paul Smith, 79, of Traverse City, formerly of Hubbell and Detroit, passed away on Sunday, November 7, 2010 at the Grand Traverse Pavilions. He was born on June 8, 1931 in Hubbell to the late Stuart Smith and Mabel (Piche-Cantin) Smith.

James graduated from St. Vincent High School in 1949 and studied at the Palestrina Institute for Sacred Music for 2 years. He attended the University of Detroit for 1 year and attended and graduated from Wayne State University in 1962. James was a special education teacher for several schools in the Detroit area for his entire career. He also taught students who were home-bound. James was an organist and choir director for the Precious Blood Catholic Church and Christ the King Catholic Church in Detroit. He also was an organist and choir director for churches in Hubbell, Lake Linden, and Calumet. James served his country proudly in the United States Air Force during the Korean War.

He is survived by his siblings, Stuart G. (Toni) Smith of Chicago, IL, Lawrence (Mary) Smith of Idaho Falls, ID, Helen (Robert) Kuhn of Interlochen, Brian J. Smith of Evanston, IL, Paul (Jeannine) Smith of Attica, Barbara (Dan) Devine of Beverly Hills, MI, and Marion (George) Light of Norwood; and many loving nieces and nephews.
James was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Robert Smith, and his sister-in-law Kitty Smith.

A memorial service will be held in the spring.
