Marvin Michael Nolley

Marvin Michael Nolley was born August 26, 1942 in Flint, MI and died October 11, 2024 in Tampa, Fl. His parents were Verna (Street) Nolley and Marvin Nolley. He attended Flint Technical High School where he was a member of the choir which included his lifelong friends Daniel Brown and Ronald Brown (no relation). Flint Tech closed in 1959 and Marvin was in the first graduating class (1960) at Flint Southwestern High School.

His first year of post-secondary education was at Southern Mississippi University. In his second year at Flint Junior College he joined the Delta Sigma Nu fraternity and made many lifelong friends. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Western Michigan University and his Master of Arts degree from Michigan State University, graduating with a 3.50 GPA. After graduation he married Adrianne Odney. He also joined the United States Army Reserves.

His professional life began with IBM and was followed by work at Flint Junior College and on the faculty at Flint Northwestern High School. He and Adrianne divorced and Marvin moved to Kalamazoo, MI.

He married Carol Latture in Florida January 3, 1983. In Kalamazoo he worked at International Music Festivals of Parchment, MI. While there he managed a 10 K race. He helped found and then became Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Michigan Basketball Advisory Council (MBAC). He was active in planning the MBAC's annual Awards Banquet and annual Golf tournament for several years.

Marvin and Carol moved to Tampa, Florida in 1986. They joined the Tampa Palms Golf Club and founded Gladstones Flame Grilled Chicken in 1987. They built Gladstones into a three store operation in greater Tampa before selling Gladstones in 2004. Marvin and Carol divorced shortly after Marvin founded NMY/The Glades Mobile Home Park in Tampa in 2004 which he owned and operated until his death.

Marvin was a fine writer with an exceptional vocabulary. He was an excellent organizer. All of his professional work was characterized by great attention to detail and determination to be recognized as first class. He loved sports, travel and animals. He had pet dogs and cats throughout his life and was a supporter of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).

Marvin was a lifelong sports fan. He was a boy when quarterback Bobby Layne led the Detroit Lions to three NFL Championships in eight years in the 1950's. He was thirteen when Al Kaline joined the Detroit Tigers right out of high school and at twenty became the youngest player ever to win the American League batting title. Kaline batted .340 that year.

Marvin considered Joe Roberson, Nick Manych, Jerry Bebee and Paul Krause to be among the finest Flint area athletes of his time. Marvin was known as a talented racquetball player at the Flint YMCA. In Kalamazoo he was known as a formidable shuffleboard player at the Knollwood Bar. Marvin's favorite athlete was Babe Ruth - until Earvin "Magic" Johnson came around. Marvin was very proud of his all-time baseball outfield: Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle and Ted Williams.

Marvin Michael Nolley will be greatly missed by his fraternity brothers and many lifelong friends. He is survived by cousins in Michigan and Tennessee. His cousin Nancy Smitz and good friend James "JB" Brown helped make his final days in hospice more comfortable.
A private celebration of life will be held in 2025. Marvin asked that contributions in his name be made to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
