Hanak, Joseph F. (Polka Joe) Outdoor Resort, Long Key, FL (formerly of Mt. Morris, MI,) age 91, died Friday May 15, 2015 at Baptist Memorial Hospital, in Homestead, FL. A celebration of his life will be held January 23rd at Outdoor Resorts, at 2:00pm, Pastor Larry White officiating. A Navy Honor Guard service will follow. Joseph was a proud WWII veteran. As per his request, his remains will be transported to his favorite fishing hole by a fleet of fishing buddies for a burial at sea. Joseph loved the outdoors and was an avid snowmobiler, hunter, fisherman and water-skier. He loved playing the accordion and telling jokes. He was inducted into the Michigan Polka Hall of Fame. After retiring from General Motors in 1974, Joe moved to the Florida Keys and fell in love with the sport fishing and was known as the “King of the Yellowtailers”.
Joseph is survived by longtime companion and fiancé’ Lillian Burke; daughters, Barbara (Michael) Perry, Sandra Shriner, Cheryl (Ken) Burke, Debbie (Ken) Burke, and son, Steve Burke; 5 Grandchildren, Jamie Hare, Kristina Princinsky, Amanda Reed, Jody Meredith, and Heidi Alcodray; 13 Great-grandchildren, brother, Robert Hanak of St. Louis, MO., and niece Doris Shoens and family. Special friends of Harvard St.; Krouses, Phillpotts, Hudsons, Lucas’ and many special friends at Outdoor Resorts and his little dog Chico.
He was preceded in death by wife Doris, father John Hanak, Step-mother Anna, mother Amelia Miller, step-father John Miller, brother John Jr., sister Rosemary, brother-in-law Flodie Turbeville, sister-in-law Ermalee Turbeville.
