SLOAN, James Douglas – of Davison, formerly of Lapeer County, passed away Sunday, May 19, 2013 at Fostered Hearts Adult Foster Care in Milan. The family will receive visitors from 5-8 PM on Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at Allen Funeral Home, 9136 Davison Rd., Davison. A Rosary will be prayed 7 PM on Tuesday. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 AM Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 404 N. Dayton St., Davison, Rev. Fr. Carl Simon celebrant. Burial, with Military Honors, will be in Davison Cemetery. There will be one hour of visitation prior to the service on Wednesday at church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Elba Township Fire Department Station #1.
Jim was born in Flint, MI on August 2, 1937, son of the late Douglas J. and Stella F. (McDonald) Sloan. Jim married Caroline Arloa Sterling on July 14, 1956. He was a member of the National Guard, enjoying the retreats to Grayling. Jim was the Assistant Chief at the Elba Township Fire Department Station #1 for 6 years, serving the department for 16 years. He worked at General Motors in Grand Blanc for 30 years, retiring in 1995. Jim loved going up north to his cabin in Lewiston, MI, creating many wonderful memories with family and friends. After retirement, he loved traveling to Florida for the winter and riding his golf cart. Throughout his life he also loved his small hobby farm.
Jim is survived by his wife, Caroline; children, Julie (John) Harrow, Robin (Tim Allen) Sloan, James Dean (Jill) Sloan, Kevin (Lynn) Sloan, Stephanie (Bill) Hawkins and Daniel (Rhonda) Sloan; 9 grandchildren; 1 great-granddaughter; siblings, William Sloan, Donald Sloan, Robert Friday and Dora Sloan. He was preceded in death by Gloria LaFaver and Richard Sloan.
