MATZKE, Marguerite A. “Maggie” – of Birch Run, age 97, died Saturday, January 20, 2018 at Hoyt Nursing and Rehab Centre in Saginaw. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in memory of Maggie at 11AM Thursday, January 25, 2018 at Saints Francis and Clare Parish, 12157 Church Street, Birch Run. Fr. Thomas McNamara officiating. Burial in Birch Run Township Cemetery with Military Honors under the direction of the Birch Run VFW Post #7542. The family will receive visitors at the O’Guinn Family Funeral Home in Birch Run on Wednesday from 12PM until 9PM and at the church on Thursday from 10AM until the time of Mass at 11AM. A Rosary will be prayed at 7PM Wednesday evening at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation or Saints Francis and Clare Parish.
Maggie was born January 3, 1921 in Saginaw, Michigan to the late Elerick and Mildred (Spears) Raquepau. She graduated from Birch Run High School in 1939. Maggie obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in education from Central Michigan University in 1967. She married Clyde Matzke in Farragut, Idaho on September 10, 1945. He preceded her in death on December 25, 1993. Maggie was a World War II Navy veteran, serving in a hospital from 1943 until 1945. She was a teacher for 35 years, retiring in 1981. Maggie taught at Marr School, Canada Road School, Fosters Elementary, Burt School, Taymouth School, and finally Birch Run Area Schools. She was a member of Saints Francis and Clare Parish, formerly Sacred Heart Catholic Church her entire life. Maggie was a member of the VFW Post #7542’s Ladies Auxiliary and the Michigan Education Associations Union. She enjoyed gardening, bird watching, bowling, card parties, and loved volunteering her time. Maggie also enjoyed traveling the country, especially spending her winters in Golf Shores, Alabama.
Surviving are: Sons: Jack Matzke and Chris (Dawn) Matzke; Grandchildren: Kristen (Clay) Brophy, Carrie (Scott) Richardson, Carrie (Brian) Taylor, Jeff Matzke, Brady Matzke, Tracie (Mike) Vandermeulen, Holly Matzke, Andrea (Manny) O’Dell, Miranda (Chad) Leach, Brianne Matzke, and Steven Matzke; 20 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; Sisters: Loraine Shepard, Wanda McBratnie, and many nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by: Sons, Gale Thomas Matzke, Danny Matzke, Clyde Matzke Jr., and Brian Matzke; Grandson, Thomas Matzke; Sisters: Leola Swart, Geraldine Thrasher, Bernice Smith, Robert Raquepau, Woodrow Raquepau, Wilbur Raquepau, Peachy Raquepau, and daughter-in-law, Patricia Matzke.
