Gary James Hayward , 65, of Flushing, MI passed into eternal life at his home on Wednesday, March 25, 2020. He leaves behind his wife of 21 years, Lisa (Lynn) and his son Michael (age 17). Gary has a brother, Randy of Applegate, MI and 2 sisters, Donna Marion of Grand Blanc, MI and Rozann Geno of Turnwater, WA. He loved his nieces and nephew Tania, Christy, Randy, Trina, Misha,
as well as great nieces Taylor, Mirabelle, Gwen, Ellie and great nephew Dalton. Also grieving his passing are his wife’s siblings,Theresa Lynn, Jim Lynn, Diana (Bruce) Haase, Steve (Vicky) Lynn and Kristi (Darren) Brendahl, along with 9 nieces and nephews and 1 great nephew. Gary was born January 27, 1955 to Leonard and Beverly Hayward in Brown City, MI. Arriving in the midst of a snow storm, he was their fourth child and the last infant born in the Brown City Hospital. Raised on the family farm, Gary continued to run it for 2 years
following his dad’s death in 1973. Gary went on to study heating and cooling (HVAC) at Lansing Community College and then at Ferris State University. He moved to Grand Blanc, MI in the early 80’s where he worked maintenance and transportation for Genesee County Community Mental Health. Soon after, he began teaching HVAC classes part-time at Mott Community College and ran his own business,Hayward’s Heating and Cooling. He fixed many, many people’s furnaces, air conditioners and freezers, but often forgot to bill them. Gary met Lisa K. Lynn in 1997 and a year later they were married at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Burton. The same month as his wedding, he retired from the County and began teaching full time at Mott. He coordinated the HVAC department for several years but his heart was always with his students. He loved to make class fun and to empower his students with life skills, study skills and real-world trade applications. He was affectionately known to many as Dr. Cool. His son, Michael James was born in 2002, a “chip off the old block” from the very beginning. Together, father and son took naps, navigated the TV remote, attended tractor shows, shared McDonald french fries, fixed things around the house and talked about trading stocks and managing investments. Gary taught Michael to drive before losing his own independence to a stroke in October 2017; he lived another 2 ½ years. Though paralyzed and pain-ridden, he loved to talk with people and make them laugh. He often flirted with nurses, and he thoroughly enjoyed visits from neighborhood children. Gary is remembered as a faithful husband, great dad, excellent teacher and compassionate friend. He was a kind man of integrity, deep faith, and generosity. He hosted his own Life Celebration Party, held February 3, 2020 at Cranberries Cafe in Goodrich. A funeral mass will be held later this spring at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, Burton www.holyredeemerburton.org The family will receive visitors at the church prior to mass and a dinner will follow afterwards at the Holy Redeemer Family LIfe Center, catered by Cranberries Cafe. In lieu of flowers or gifts, contributions are encouraged to be made to the Gary Hayward Memorial Fund of the Flushing Community Church, 9500 W. Pierson Rd,
Flushing, MI 48433. All donations will directly help local people to pay utility bills. Gary is now embraced by his Saviour Jesus Christ, as he feasts at the Heavenly Banquet, pain free and agile once more. He embraces his 3 children already there, Jessica Grace, Jacob Matthew and Charity Ann. He is enjoying again the company of his parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and many friends who have gone before him. While he is removed from our sight for now, he will never be gone from our memories or our hearts. |
