Dr. George D. Politis of Flint Michigan, died peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, September 10, 2019. He was 81 years old. Dr. Politis was a beloved and respected pediatrician who served the Flint area for over 40 years. He was preceded in death by his parents Demetrios and Eugenia Politis and brother Aristomenes Karakitsos. He is survived by his wife Rita, children Dr. Eugenia Politis (Peter Malinowski), Demetri Politis, and Anne Hadgis (Dr. Craig), and brother Dr. John Karakitsos (Coleen). He is also survived by his aunts Efstratia Janis and Panagiota Kopita, cousins James Gallas (Helen), Dr. Mennen Gallas (Dr. Stacey), Dr. Eugenia Kopita, Litsa Stavrakos, Peter Politis (Georgia), Hariklea Melegos (Sotirios), and nephews Dimitri Karakitsos (Anna) and Manny Karakitsos.
Dr. Politis was born in Athens, Greece on January 28, 1938 and grew up in Stadio Tegeas, Arcadia, Greece. He was baptized at Panagia Evangelistria Church on Tinos Island. At the age of four, his house was used as a command post by the Nazi generals during World War II. His mother was imprisoned by the Nazis and at the last moment was not sent to Auschwitz. Dr. Politis graduated from the University of Athens Medical School in 1963. As a student, George was very involved in the political scene in Greece and served as Secretary General of the student union. He received additional medical training at London University Hospitals in England. George also served in the Greek military as a Lieutenant in Kavala, Greece.
Dr. Politis moved to Flint, Michigan in 1972 and completed a pediatric residency at Hurley Hospital, being promoted to chief resident within one month of beginning the residency. After graduating, he became board certified with the American Board of Pediatrics and inherited the pediatric practice of Dr. Jack Tauscher in Flint, Michigan. Dr. Politis practiced many years with Dr. Behrouz Moghtassed and held privileges at St. Joseph, McLaren, and Hurley Hospitals. He often worked as the sole neonatologist in the hospital. Additionally, Dr. Politis served as Chairman of Pediatrics at St. Joseph and Genesys Hospitals. He held an Associate Professor position at the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, training medical students and pediatric residents. Dr. Politis cared deeply for the children and families of the Flint area and was responsible for saving the lives of numerous children.
George was a devoted member and benefactor of the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church serving as Church and Greek Festival treasurer, Education & Scholarship committees, and parish AHEPA president. He was a supporter of the Flint Cultural Center, a member of Friends of Modern Art, and volunteered with the Flint Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. George also was a skilled billiards and backgammon player, enjoyed Detroit Tigers games, movies, and traveling.
George was an honorable and noble person, a proud American, and always thought the best of everyone. It was not uncommon for former patients and their families to recognize him around the community and show him their gratitude for his loving medical care. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and community.
Funeral service will be held 11am Tuesday, September 17, 2019
at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 2245 East Baldwin Road, Grand Blanc.
Burial in Sunset Hills Cemetery.
Visitation 4-8pm Monday at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint. A Trisagion Service will be held at 7pm Monday evening at the funeral home.
