Richard Emerson Todd, affectionately known as Ric, passed away on Thursday, June 20, 2024, leaving behind a vibrant legacy marked by a deep love for the arts. Born on January 21, 1942, in Chesaning, Michigan, Richard's life led him on a spirited journey from the Midwest to the sunny shores of San Diego, California. His love for art, coupled with his innate talent and creativity, guided his life's work, touching countless hearts and minds along the way.
A memorial gathering will take place on Saturday, July 27, 2024 at McFarlan's Pub in Chesaning from 4:00pm until 6:00pm
Richard began his career as an Art Teacher at Loy Norrix High School in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where his creative spirit inspired students to view the world through a vibrant, artistic lens. His infectious enthusiasm and dedication led him to become a beloved figure within the community. After retiring in 1988, Richard moved to San Diego, where he continued to cultivate his passion for the arts. He was the director of cultural events at Chula Vista from 1999-2015. He acted as the Artist in Residence at St. Paul Cathedral, served on the board of the California Ballet Company, and was a generous patron and donor to the Bonita Museum and the California Coastal Commission.
Richard also owned Ric Art Consulting Business, where he employed his keen eye and profound artistic insight to foster creative environments for others. As Albert Einstein said, "Creativity is contagious, pass it on," and Richard indeed passed on his creativity to everyone he met. His love for art was not only a career but a lifestyle, one that was woven into the very fabric of his being.
Richard is survived by his loving sister, Sharon (Kent) Kukulis; nephew, Todd (Aileen) Kukulis; great-nieces, Brooke and Maddie Kukulis; dear friends and neighbors in San Diego; dear friends and classmates in Chesaning; treasured cousins in Flint, Texas, Detroit, and Kalamazoo; Jason (John) Delton of Glendale, Arizona; beloved companion, Pippin; as well as many other loving family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Hazel Todd and grandmother, “Sweet” Dottie Harris.
Richard's life was a testament to the idea that "Art is not what you see, but what you make others see." His spirit, talent, and creative force left an indelible imprint on the world, making it a little more colourful, a little more vibrant, and a lot more beautiful. |
