Robert Lawrence Compton
of Midland formerly of Houghton Lake
September 7, 1924 – February 6, 2016
My dad died this morning. We had just given him a bath. He was so sick. When he died I opened a window and let his soul fly off to Heaven. How comforting that was for me and my family. My Dad was the oldest of eight children born to Perry and Edna (Yancer) Compton in the fall of the year. Dad was raised in Freeland, MI on the family farm. My Dad served in the Army from 1943-1946 during WWII. He was a cook during the day and an embalmer at night. He served in Germany. It was wonderful that he was there during the liberation of Nazi Germany. Dad got married to my mother, Eileen (Schantz) on September 26, 1953. He worked for Lufkin Rule which was a manufacturer of a wide selection of measuring tools located in Saginaw. From Lufkin, he went to General Motors, Steering Gear and eventually retired to Houghton Lake with Mom. While at Lufkin, Dad played baseball for the company team. He was a catcher and controlled crucial decisions behind home plate. Dad loved to hunt and fish. You could find him and my Mom on the frozen lake each winter ice fishing in their shanty. They loved to snowmobile; Dad would leave Mom watching the tip-ups and he would tool around the lake on the Ski-Doo. They traveled; they camped and had a ball doing it all. He also loved a cold bottle of Stroh’s beer. Well maybe a few bottles of beer.
I would say I’m all alone now because my mother, Eileen died in 1999, my mother-in-law died in 2010, and my beloved husband, Jim died in 2013. Dad has joined the aforementioned and a parade of people in Heaven. Of course he is there with my Mom, my husband Jim, his sister-in-law, Phrona Compton, his sisters, Nellie Rohn, Isabelle Kroning, and Loretta Ladrig. My Dad is also with his deceased brothers-in-law, Gerald Hause, Victor Rohn, and Edward Ladrig.
I may feel alone but God is good. You see, I am here with my daughter, his granddaughter, Jessica Rine and her fiancé Jimmy Teal. My Dad’s brothers are here; Ralph Compton and Wayne (Carol) Compton. My Dad’s sisters are here too, Donna Hause and Dorothy (Larry) Root. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Jim’s family, well the whole Rine family have been a delight and a great support.
Life is short. Dad would say “Do things that matter”.
