Marie Sleno, age 91 of Owosso, passed away Sunday, August 2, 2015 at Oliver Woods Retirement Community in Owosso. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 6, 2015 at St. Paul Catholic Church, 111 N. Howell St. Owosso, Michigan 48867. Fr. Michael O’Brien will be officiating with burial to follow in St. Paul Cemetery, Owosso. Family will receive friends at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Jennings-Lyons Chapel in Owosso Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. with the rosary being prayed at 6:00 p.m.
Marie was born August 29, 1923 in Easton, the oldest of 4 to the late Albert W. and Helen M. (Moss) Sleno. After graduating as a salutatorian from St. Michael High School in Maple Grove, Marie earned her teaching certificate from Aquinas College and taught in the Hurd and New Haven Center as well as the Washburn rural schools from 1942-1952, ultimately retiring after 39 years of teaching in 1981 from the homebound and hospitalized program of the Owosso Public Schools.
She continued her education at Central Michigan University, Eastern Michigan University and the University of Michigan, attaining a master’s degree in 1957.
Upon retirement, she continued to travel, seeing 45 of the states, as well as Ireland. Marie enjoyed hosting and attending bridge parties, needlepoint, crocheting and golf.
She was a member of the Daughters of Isabella and the St. Paul’s Altar Society along with holding offices in the MEA and several other organizations, including Delta Kappa Gamma.
Marie is survived by her 3 siblings: Margaret Saffer of Washington, James (Anna) Sleno of Flushing, Patricia (Larry) Whalen of Waterford; nieces and nephews: Diane Hillaire, Karen Sleno, Bill Sleno, Janet (andy) Alexander, David (Vicki) Whalen and several great and great great nieces and nephews.
