MUSE, Jr., U.T. (Tommy) Age 82 passed away on Sunday, April 21, 2019. He made his transition peacefully and surrounded by his family.
Tommy was born on February 28, 1937, in Pleasant Hill, MS to U.T. and Lucille Muse. The family later moved to Memphis, TN, where he attended Melrose High School. In 1956, Tommy enlisted in the United States Navy, where he became a machinist and served in Vietnam. In 1957, he married Margaret (Flynn) Muse to which 4 children were born. He was honorably discharged and moved to Benton Harbor, MI.
He later moved his family to Flint, MI where he became employed with the Flint Public Schools as a security guard at Whittier Middle School. Over the years, many of the students grew to love him and sometimes hated to see him coming. It was also during this time that Tommy met Maribeth (Hagewood) Cooper and two children were born. As Tommy succeeded in his employment, this is where he found his passion, commitment, and dedication to advocating and fighting for the rights of others.
Over the course of his 20+years, he became affiliated with the Flint Security Association/Michigan Education Association/National Education Association (FSA/MEA/NEA). He became an active member of his local association going on to serve as their local President. He was also elected to represent Region 10 to the MEA Board of Directors. He also served on the MEA ESP Caucus Executive Board, MEA-PAC Council, the Summer Leadership Conference Advisory Committee, and the Art Acquisition Committee. In 2001, Tommy received the Region 10, Hall of Fame Award. While Tommy retired in 2001, he continued to be on the front lines for the retirees as an active MEA retired RA Delegate, Alternate Delegate and NEA RA Delegate.
As Tommy developed his passion and fought for public education, fair wages, hours, and working conditions for support staff educators, he met Debra (Debbie) Morgan who had the same passions as a teacher in the Grand Rapids Public School District, and as an Advocate who held many roles in the Grand Rapids Education Association (GREA). It was this shared passion and commitment that led the two to become one and marry in 1993. They lived a happy life together working, traveling and spending quality time with family and friends up until Debbie’s death in 2008.
Tommy was a family man, and a firm supporter of public education. His sense of humor, and his willingness to help anyone who needed it will certainly be missed. He leaves behind his children: Ula Thomas Muse, III., Sharon Muse, Tanya (Ervin) Pratt, Tracey Hagewood, and Brian Hagewood-Muse, grandchildren: Diogenes Muse-Cleveland, Darnell Holiday, Mercedes Kemp, Dominique Muse, Desha Kemp, Dayton Willinsky, Phoenix, AZ, Elizabeth (Karamoko) Wysinger, and Thomeshia Muse; two Sister-in-Laws, Sue Morgan and Janis (Tom) VanRiper, Brother-in-Laws, Robert (Nancy) Morgan, David (Debbie) Morgan, and a host of other great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, UT and Lucille Muse, his son, Darrell Muse, and his wife, Debra Morgan-Muse and mother-in-law Dorothy Morgan.
Following Tommy’s wishes, he has been cremated. Family hour will be Saturday, April 27, 2019 at 10:00am with a Memorial Service immediately following at 11:00am at Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 W. Hill Road, Flint, MI 48507.
