LONG, Pastor William Reuel - age 94, of Swartz Creek, went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, August 31, 2014. Funeral services will be held 11:30 AM Thursday, September 4, 2014 at Sharp Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 6063 Fenton Rd., Flint. Interment will follow at Great Lakes National Cemetery. Visitation will be held 4-9 PM Wednesday and 10 AM until time of service Thursday at the funeral home. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to Carriage Town Ministries. Pastor Long was born March 21, 1920 in McCracken County, Kentucky. William moved with his family to Detroit when he was a small boy. In 1940, William visited family in Eastern Kentucky, met and married Mildred M. Owens and brought her back to Detroit. He was inducted into the US Army in November 1943 where he served with the 28th Division, 109th Infantry Regiment. From Private to 1st Sergeant, William was involved in 5 major battles included the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge and a Bronze Star and was honorably discharged October 23, 1945. In 1950 William moved his family to Flint where he served God as the Pastor of Fenton Road Missionary Baptist Church until he retired in 1994. The love of his life Mildred, preceded him in death after 70 years of marriage in 2011. He was also preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers and 3 sisters. William is survived by his 4 children, Reuel (Judith) Long of Ann Arbor, Phillip (Teri) Long of Swartz Creek, Susan (Andrew) Prine of Saginaw and Joseph (Michelle) Long of Swartz Creek; Ten grand children and 16 great grandchildren. The family wishes to thank the staff of the Laurels in Mt. Pleasant and the staff of the Masonic Pathways in Alma for the care they provided over the past two years.
