Stephen J. Slocum of Flushing, age 92, died Thursday, December 13, 2012 at Avalon Hospice. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, December 17, 2012 at Mayfair Bible Church. Pastor Dean Stewart will officiate. Burial will follow at Flushing Cemetery. Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. Sunday at Rossell Funeral Home and 10 a.m. until the start of the service Monday at the church. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans.
Stephen was born in Chapin, Michigan on January 31, 1920, the son of Otto and Bertha (Olney) Slocum. He married Vivian Whitford on January 3, 1947 in Mississippi. Stephen was a Veteran of the U.S. Army where he proudly served his country as a Staff Sgt. Paratrooper during World War II in the Philippines and Japan. He was employed by General Motors as a skilled trades Tool Grinder at Chevrolet for over 33 years. Stephen was a long time Flushing Twp. resident and established Slocum airport on West Coldwater Rd. and was a farmer for over 53 years. He was a former member of First Baptist Church in Flushing where he helped start the Boys Brigade at the church. Stephen built several homes and barns and together with his wife, they enjoyed traveling the country in their motor home for 6 months out of the year. He was a hard worker and devoted to his family and loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Stephen is survived by his wife of 66 years, Vivian; sons, Laurence “Larry” and wife Margaret Slocum of Mooresville, IN, Ted C. and wife Sue Slocum of Flushing; grandchildren, Julie Taylor of Indianapolis, IN, Laura (Duane) Lee of Athens, TN, Shawn (Kristin) Slocum of Plano, TX, Ryan Slocum of Grand Blanc; great-grandchildren, Stephanie, Zachary, Jacob, Cara, Ethan; sister-in-law, Lillian Bishop of Flushing; brother-in-law, Bob and Betty Whitford of Lake Alfred, FL and many special nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ray Slocum; sister, Florence Walker; half-brothers, Perry and Herbert Thompson. |
