MASON, Carl E. - Of Flint, age 93, died Saturday, October 25, 2014 at Hurley Medical Center.

Funeral service will be 1pm Wednesday, October 29, 2014 at First Presbyterian Church of Flint, 746 South Saginaw Street, Flint, 48502, Dr. John L. Musgrave officiating.

Burial in Crestwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to the Hurley Medical Center Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit or the University of Michigan Athletic Department.

Visitation 4-8pm Monday and 10am-2pm and 4-8pm Tuesday at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint. Mr. Mason will be at the church 12pm Wednesday until the time of the service.

Carl was born in Bay City, MI on June 28, 1921. Carl married Ida Hart on November 6, 1954 at First Presbyterian Church. He graduated from Flint Northern High School and attended GMI Institute and the University of Michigan and was a member of the Alumni Association. Carl was a member and Elder at First Presbyterian Church, member of the Flint Golf Club, member of Lodge 174 Bay City Consistory and Shriners. He was a member and past President of the Flint West Kiwanis Club. He served on the old Flint City Commission and Flint City Council from 1962-1975. Carl also served as Mayor Pro-Tem for two years. Carl was a member of the Genesee County Board of Commissioners from 1976-1980. He served on the Hurley Medical Center Board of Managers from May of 1982 until April 1992 and again from May 2003 until April 2013. Carl was also serving as a member of the Hurley Foundation since March 11, 2000. Carl was a member and past President of the Michigan Land Title Association. He won the Mary C. Feindt Award in 2003 for dedicated service to the Michigan Land Title Association. He was a member of the State Boundary Commission. Carl also worked at Fisher Body I in the Accounting Department. He owned Flint Abstract and Title since 1961 which became Fidelity Abstract and Title Company. Carl was Vice President of Metropolitan Title Company, owner of the Carl E. Mason Agency and was a Consultant at Mason-Burgess Title Agency.

Surviving are wife of 60 years, Ida;

children, James and wife Nancy of St. Louis, Missouri and Karla J. Mason of Grand Blanc;

grandchildren, Dawn Stoffa of Chesterfield, Missouri and James II and wife Traci of Fenton, Missouri;

five great-grandchildren Robert, Matthew, Paige, Lauryn and Mallorie

sister, Evelyn Scott of Tucson, Arizona;

sister-in-law, Beverly Hart of Grand Blanc;

and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by sisters, Shirley Gilbert, Betty Flewelling and Helen Peterson; brother-in-law, Halford S. Hart.
