Born: 5/8/1928
Died: 3/2/2015
Age: 86
Community: Grand Blanc Township, MI

RAISS, Carl Frederick III Was born May 8, 1928 in Detroit, Michigan and lived in Grosse Pointe, Michigan in his younger years. He passed away from heart failure at age 86 on March 2, 2015. He is survived by his wife, Jean Raiss and his two daughters, Julie Slayback who is married to Scott Slayback and has two children, Luke and Paul, as well as Sarah Raiss, who is married to Danny Dalla-Longa and has two step children, Damian and Adrienne. His mother, Paula, father, Harold Norman, and his sister Elaine pre-deceased him. He is also survived by a nephew Leonard Shepard, married to Laura, and a niece Paula Shepard.
Carl loved to golf, bowl, and was very good at cards, cribbage and bridge. He snowmobiled an average of 1500+ miles a year right up to age 85! He was very athletic having lettered in tennis, and also playing squash and soccer. He participated in an annual hunting trip, where more cards were played than animals hunted, and an annual shoot out where about 25 types of guns and rifles were included in a best shot contest.
His first job was tasting beer at Stroh’s where his father was Traffic Manager and part owner of Stroh’s. He was in the military drum and bugle corps at Culver Military Academy where he attended high school. He was also a counselor. Then he was in the Army Security Agency working at the National Security Agency as a code breaker where he was very accomplished at breaking codes in the Korean War. But he always knew he wanted to be an engineer because he loved to build things. After receiving his Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering in 1951, he went on to achieve a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1955 and a Master’s of Science in Industrial and Operations Research in 1964. He proceeded to work as an engineer at General Motors for 31 years. His favorite jobs were in Project Engineering and Production Supervision as he truly loved all technical aspects and helping young people develop and reach their full potential.
Carl contributed to his community in addition to his full time career. He volunteered for and was a member of: the Lions as Secretary, the Board of the Genesee Arc, the Alumni Control Board of his fraternity in 1950 and as President and Secretary, the Retired Men’s Fellowship of Greater Flint as Secretary, the Golf League as President, Secretary and Treasurer, and the Society of Automotive Engineers. Most recently he was treasurer for his home association.
When people talked about Carl they said he was tolerant, patient, rolled with the punches, very intelligent and lots of fun! He received the name of “Pod” from his daughter Julie when she was taking Spanish lessons. Padre is father in Spanish, and Padre got shortened to “Pod” and it stuck for life!
He produced drawings for his brother-in-law’s, David Shepard’s, computer patent which are in the Smithsonian Institute.
His accomplishment of which always said he was most proud was “raising two wonderful daughters who knew what they wanted in life and went after it.” His daughters may be biased, but they think he was the best dad in the world and feel unbelievably lucky and blessed to have had his guidance, wisdom, love and support for so many years. His wife feels the same.
