KOLBE, Leslie E. “Les” – of Davison, age 84, passed away November 3, 2016 at his residence. Cremation has taken place. A Funeral Service will be held 11 AM Friday, November 11, 2016 at Allen Funeral Home, 9136 Davison Rd., Davison. Inurnment will be in St. John Cemetery. Visitation will be 1-4 & 6-8 PM Thursday. There will also be one hour of visitation prior to the service on Friday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to MDA in memory of his grandson, Christopher.

Les was born in Flint, MI on May 31, 1932, son of the late Frederick and Alice (Southall) Kolbe. Their family moved to Grand Blanc in 1933 where Les entered the Grand Blanc School system graduating in 1950. Les entered Flint Junior College and then transferred to The University of Michigan School of Music in 1952.

Before being drafted into the US Army in 1953 Les entered a wonderful marriage to his high school sweetheart Elizabeth “Joyce” Olsen. They were married for over 60 years until her death in 2013. While in the Army the Kolbes spent two years at Fort Carson, Colorado in the United States 31st Division Band and she was a teller at Colorado State Bank in Colorado Springs. The Kolbes returned to Ann Arbor where Les entered the University of Michigan School of Graduate Studies receiving his Master’s degree in Music Education.

In 1956 Les became the band and choir director in the Byron School system for three years, moving to the Flint Bentley School system in 1960. He retired from Bentley in 1977 and was employed by General Motors as a security guard until 1992.

During their retirement, Les and Joyce doted on their five children, 14 grandchildren and later six great-grandchildren. They became members of Elderhostel, touring many States and foreign countries for the next 25 years.

Les leaves two sons, Matthew (Nancy) Kolbe, Andrew (Susan) Kolbe; three daughters, Mary (Scot) Sutton, Ann (Ronald) Averett, Patricia Kolbe; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Jeanne Gray. He was preceded in death by his 19 year old grandson, Christopher Kolbe; sister, Suzanne Bendle. The family would like to extend a special thank you to his caring neighbors, Bill, Rita, Rich, Lynne, Dorothy, Bonnie, Mike and Amanda.
