MARY LOUISE HUGHES, age 101, passed away March 6, 2013 at Caretel Inns of Linden. She was born September 20, 1911 to Louis J. Peters and Rosalie F. (Garrett) Peters in Oxford, Michigan. She was raised in Rochester, Michigan and graduated valedictorian of her Rochester High School class in 1929. In 1933 she graduated from Alma College in Alma, Michigan and in four years of college she received all A’s but for one B+ which, at graduation, the professor apologized for ruining her perfect record. She taught high school English and Latin and was married to Halley C. Hughes on June 22, 1936. She retired from teaching to raise her family and in the 1950’s she received a Masters Degree from the University of Michigan in Elementary Education. She taught in Otisville, Columbiaville and for a number of years was the third grade teacher at Hill Elementary School in Davison, Michigan. She ended up teaching remedial reading before she retired from Davison School in 1969. Mary Louise is survived by two sons: Retired Judge Richard L. Hughes (Suzanne) of Otisville, MI and James L. Hughes (Peggy) of Roscommon, MI.; six grandchildren: Robert C. Hughes, Jr. of Ann Arbor, MI. Jeannette Louise Vrieland (Brian) of Farmington Hills, MI. Elizabeth Anne Hughes-Latchana (Mark) of Davison, MI Michael James Hughes (Teresa) of Glen Easton, W. VA. Sara Fisher (Rick) of Mt. Pleasant, S.C. and James Hughes (Stacie) of Alexandria, VA.; Nine great grandchildren; daughter-in-law Jane Hughes; sister-in-law Madeline Peters; four nieces and two nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Halley C. Hughes; her son, Robert C. Hughes; her brothers Brod Peters and Herbert Peters and her sister, Dorothy Kelly. Mary Louise had a great and long life. She and her late husband traveled across the United States and overseas and they loved to spend the summers at their cabin on the South Branch of the AuSable River near Roscommon, MI. She was an avid reader and loved to play cards. She and her son Richard played hundreds of games of cribbage. She was a distinguished, intelligent, sweet, kind and gracious person who was loved by all who knew her. She will be sorely missed. The world has just lost a great lady. In honor of Mary Louise’s request cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Robert C. Hughes Memorial Fund and sent to Schoolcraft County Community Foundation at P.O Box 452, Mantistique, MI. 49854. Memories may be shared with the family at rlhjudge@gmail.com.
