BACKA, Martin Michael, Jr. “Marty” - Of Flint, age 79, died Sunday, December 8, 2013 at Maple Place Adult Foster Care.
Funeral service will be held 11am Thursday, December 12, 2013 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint,
Reverend Father Roy Horning officiating.
Entombment at New Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation 3-8pm Wednesday and 10am Thursday until the time of the service at the funeral home.
Marty was born in Coal Port, Pennsylvania on September 25, 1934, the son of the late Martin Sr. and Mildred (Murgas) Backa. Marty married Deanna Russell on April 30, 1960 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Marty graduated from Mandeville High School and served in the United States Army from 1955 to 1957. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, small engine repair, gardening, the Detroit Red Wings and loved animals, especially dogs. He retired as a Senior Computer Operator from General Motors AC Spark Plug in 1990 after 37 ½ years of service.
Surviving are wife, Deanna;
children, Terri (Doug) Keller and Steve Backa;
grandchildren, Douglas (Amber) Keller, Michael Keller;
great-grandchildren, Jason, Wesley and Jaxen all from Grand Blanc;
sisters, Anne (Chuck) Coonrod, Helen (Greg) Swedorske, Dorothy Hyrman and Evelyn Nielsen.
He was preceded in death by his three brothers, Joe, Andy, George and sister, Elizabeth.
