LERCHE, Rev. Gerald Gustave - age 74, of Lennon, died Sunday, May 1, 2016 at Genesys Health Park. Services will be held 11 AM Friday, May 6, 2016 at Faith Missionary Church, 1327 Elms Rd. Flint with Rev. Brent Kriesch officiating. Interment will be at Thetford Township Cemetery following a luncheon. Visitation will be held 2-8 PM Thursday and 9:30 AM - 11 AM Friday at the church. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to Brown City Camp. Gerald was born August 23, 1941 in Flint, the son of Gustave and Dorothy (Farr) Lerche. He married Marilyn Wells on April 15, 1965. Gerald retired from Beecher Public Schools after 38 years as a science teacher and Science Consultant. He was awarded the Michigan Science Teacher of the Year award in 1984. Gerald earned a AB degree from John Wesley College, a BA degree form Spring Arbor University a Master's degree from Central Michigan University and a Specialist degree in Biology. He was a Naturalist at For-Mar Nature Preserve for 17 years, taught Indian Education at Carmen Ainsworth Schools and served on the Board of Directors for G.I.S.D. Ligon Nature Center. Gerald was the Pastor at Dayton Heights Community Church for 26 1/2 years. He was an avid photographer, hunter, fisherman, and outdoorsman. He enjoyed traveling and missionary work to Central America for over 15 years and Africa. Gerald had hosted 28 foreign exchange students throughout the years. Surviving are: wife of 51 years, Marilyn; son, David Lerche and fiancée, Heather of Clinton Twp; daughter, Rebecca (Gregory) DeLaere of Naples; 8 grandchildren; sister, Janice (Dorwin) Grainger; brother, Donald (Sally) Lerche; sister-in-law, Martha Wells; beloved dog, Winston. He was preceded in death by his parents and several aunts and uncles. Arrangements by Sharp Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 6063 Fenton Rd., Flint.
