Bob was born in Flint, MI on March 8, 1927, son of the late Charles and Emma (Zandi) Gilbert. He was a graduate of St. Mary Catholic High School Class of 1945. After graduating high school, Bob proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII from 1945-1947. On March 20, 1948, Bob married the love of his life, Marcia Thomas. Together, they shared nearly seven decades of marriage before Marcia's passing on October 11, 2017. Their partnership was one built on love, respect, and devotion, and Bob carried her memory with him every day. Bob spent more than 35 years at AC Spark Plug, retiring in 1984. He was a hardworking, dependable, and skilled individual, qualities that he carried into all aspects of his life. Beyond his professional achievements, Bob had a wide range of passions. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved carpentry, canoeing, and gardening. He enjoyed the peaceful solitude of feeding his turkeys and spent countless hours crafting and flying model airplanes. A gifted aviator, Bob earned his pilot’s license at the young age of 15, an accomplishment he was always proud of. As a skilled carpenter, Bob had an exceptional eye for detail and a deep love for his craft. He preferred working with his hands, always choosing manual tools to shape the world around him. His talent extended beyond woodworking to cement work and other trades, and he eagerly passed on his knowledge to those fortunate enough to learn from him. He found particular joy in teaching his grandchildren, sharing not just his skills, but the values of hard work, patience, and creativity. The lessons he imparted will continue to inspire generations. Bob’s kindness, wisdom, and sense of humor touched the lives of all who knew him. He was a man who loved his family deeply, and his memory will live on in the hearts of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, as well as his extended family and friends.
Bob is survived by 3 children, Roberta Morton, Richard (Shelley) Gilbert and Carol (Jim) Daly; 8 grandchildren, Lisa (Jeff) Boduch, Chad Morton, Jim (Nicole) Daly, John (Carrie) Daly, Paul (Christina) Daly, Thomas (Julie) Gilbert, Marc Gilbert and Kurt (Abbey) Gilbert; 15 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Richard (Patt) Thomas; many other loving family members and good friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Emma Gilbert; 3 siblings, Leslie Gilbert, LaVerne Bartosz and June Dolan; very special cousin, Dorothy Andrus and son-in-law, Clare Morton.
