Joan was born in Flint, MI on October 11, 1951 to the late Robert and Olive Manderfield (natives of Copper Country, Upper Peninsula, Houghton MI). Joan (Joanie) had fond childhood memories of Norbert Street, Nolen Drive, Indian Hill, Warwick Hills and First Presbyterian Church. She graduated from Grand Blanc High School and later received a degree in Cosmetology from Ferris State University. On November 17, 1973 she married Robert Gegg of Belize. Joan pursued her love of hair styling for Glemby Corporation at J.L. Hudson Department stores where she traveled to London and New York to further enhance her skills. Bob and Joan moved back to Flint in August of 1974 where they started their family and raised their four children. Joan’s children were her universe. She devoted her life to the happiness of her husband, children, parents and her animals. She raised her children at Holy Family in Grand Blanc and later converted to Catholicism to develop her faith. Bob and Joan were married 44 years. Joan’s hobbies were hair styling, fashion, party planning and golf. She planned and decorated numerous Halloween, Easter and Ladies Invitational golf events at The Flint Golf Club. She was always dressed to the nines and loved decorating. She also inherited a passion for astrology from her mother. She was very intuitive and whenever she met someone the first question she would ask is “when is your birthday?” But she usually knew the answer. She was a people person; she loved being around people whether at The Skin Renewal Clinic or the pool where she always made new friends. She always saw the good in people and taught her kids to be non-judgmental. Joan exhibited loyalty, kindness, grace and humility. Her energy was infectious and she always had a smile on her face and liked to explore new places and adventures. She was a selfless person who set an example for all to live life to the fullest. Her greatest gift to her family was her strength during challenges and adversity. She loved Naples, Florida where she found peace and happiness. Joan will be remembered for her beautiful resilient spirit. She is survived by her husband Robert Gegg, children Kimberly (Ryan) Niles, Ryan (Courtney) Gegg, Lauren (Mike) Glandt and Robert Tyler Gegg. Joan who was called Nanny had 4 grandchildren Avery, Ashley and Riley Niles, Isla Glandt and Baby Gegg on the way. Plus Aunt Bernice (Martin) Tretheway and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Robert and Olive Manderfield. In lieu of flowers those desiring to make contributions may donate to The ALS Association. |
