Judson Howard “Jud” Cooper, 89, of Reese, died unexpectedly, Sunday morning, December 15, 2019 at his residence. He was born December 13, 1930 in Saginaw, the only child of the late Foss and Elsie (Hegginbottom) Cooper. Jud was a 1948 graduate of Saginaw High School, attended the University of Michigan, and received his Associate Degree from Bay City Junior College. After graduation from Bay City Junior College, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1951. He did his basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas and then served on Okinawa during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1953. On August 28, 1954 he married the former Janet Bader in Reese.
Jud was employed by Hoover Ball Bearing in Ann Arbor and later by Wickes in Saginaw. He then was employed by General Motors, Buick Division in Flint, for over thirty years as a Senior Metallurgist, retiring in 1992. His life-long passion was flying airplanes. He and his wife enjoyed many years flying their Piper Tri-Pacer 9954D and their PA-12 Piper Super Cruiser, 212 WC at Harry Browne Airport. Jud had a long flying career and in October 2019 was awarded the prestigious “Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award” by the FAA for over fifty years of flying with no accidents or infractions. He was a faithful member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Reese, and a member of the Reese American Legion Post #139. Jud’s other enjoyments included deer hunting, small game hunting, especially pheasant hunting, and fishing with sons, grandchildren, and his many friends.
Surviving besides his wife Janet, are his children and their spouses; Paul and Karen Cooper of Vassar; Beth and Tom Thielking of South Haven; Steve and Lori Cooper of Reese; Jim and Julie Cooper of Fairview; Perry Cooper of Reese; and Emily and Gregg Intrain of Rockford; eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, December 20, 2019 from Trinity Lutheran Church in Reese. Reverend Daniel Burhop and Vicar Jessten Heimer will both officiate with committal services to follow in the Blumfield Township Cemetery. Full Military Honors will be presented by the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard and Reese American Legion Post #139. Jud’s family will receive friends at Ware-Smith-Woolever, 9940 Saginaw St. in Reese on Thursday from 3-7 p.m. and at Trinity Lutheran Church on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of the services.
